General Description of the Job Class

The Vice President (VP) of Oncology Services at Duke University Health System is the lead administrator of the clinical portfolio of oncology services across the system, including the Duke Cancer Institute. This critical leader ensures the financial stability of this key service line, leads system integration, and partners with clinical, and operational leaders to drive positive results and outcomes in the cancer space. The Vice President will have a strong strategic orientation and will lead program planning, and development and the growth agenda for the service line. This is a highly collaborative leadership role, working in a dyad partnership with physician leadership, and carries a broad array of strategic, and operational responsibilities within DCI and the system.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Oversee and manage the overall operations of the cancer service line to ensure appropriate and efficient utilization of resources to meet service line goals and objectives.

Direct financial and regulatory operations within the cancer service line; prepare, analyze, and manage annual budgets.

Identify and make recommendations to implement service line improvements to gain cost efficiencies.

Oversee the development of volume projections, financial projections, and other reports necessary for managing the service line.

Act as an administrative liaison with clinic management, operations and research administration.

Lead and coordinate new business development and service delivery initiatives.

Establish mechanisms for ensuring financial sustainability of the clinical and academic enterprise associated with all oncology activities within the institution.

Provide leadership to the DCI senior administrative and physician leadership teams for strategy, outcomes, development, communications, finance, nursing, clinical operations, and human resources to ensure integration and optimal outcomes across all key areas of oncology for the institution.

Lead strategic efforts on behalf of the DCI for the establishment and growth of new community oncology practices and the acquisition of existing oncology assets/practices within the key catchment areas of the Triangle.

Lead efforts on behalf of the DCI for regional and national strategic growth initiatives in patient care and clinical research.

Advance strategic opportunities to senior leadership and the Board(s) for major initiatives and keep them apprised of key milestones.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Master's degree in health administration, business administration or the equivalent required.

Experience

Health Care Leadership: 8-plus years of experience in healthcare management required, with a demonstrated understanding of trends within cancer services and a track record of leading in this space.

Leadership in Cancer Care Operations: Proven leadership within an academic medical center and NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Strategy and Growth Acumen: A track record in leading the development and execution of key growth initiatives in the cancer space.

Matrixed Operating Environment: Demonstrated success building and leading teams within a highly matrixed organization.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrated ability to develop, mentor, and recruit a talented management team.

Record of accomplishment, and strong commitment to the enhancement of diversity, creativity, and equal opportunity.

Performance-excellence orientation that includes an understanding of LEAN and/or other performance improvement methodologies.

Strong comfort level with physicians; an ability to seek physician input, value their ideas, and meet their needs without compromising health system goals and objectives.
