General Description of the Job Class

In compliance with Duke University Health System philosophy, goals, policies, mission, and vision, the Assistant Director of Patient Care for Duke Homecare and Hospice is responsible for the provision of quality patient services, operational effectiveness and efficiency in the delivery of patient care.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Manages Duke Homecare and Hospice service line and delegates authority/ responsibility to meet goals.

Directs the resources of the clinical program on a day-to-day basis to meet the strategic and operational plans set forth. Participates in the development of the clinical areas strategic and operational plans. Openly supports and consistently communicates mission of the organization.

Serve as the staff and patient advocate to ensure optimal patient care. Assesses/coaches and evaluates staff level of practice. Develops programs that foster continued clinical development from novice to expert to positively impact on patient care and career satisfaction of staff.

Coordinates the development, implementation and evaluation of policies and procedures designed to improve operational efficiency. Coordinates QC/PI activities with appropriate staff.

Collaborates with the Director of DHCH Patient Care to determine fiscal requirements of department and prepare budgetary recommendations. Monitors the level of resources utilized in service delivery and determines the appropriateness of resource consumption in the service. Develops action plans in conjunction with the Director of DHCH Patient Care to ensure budget and resource efficiency, and satisfaction with patient care delivery.

Manage, supervise and coordinate delivery of patient care in the home health and hospice programs on a 24 hour basis. Ensure compliance with clinical patient care standards and established policies and procedures. Oversee various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, terminations and other related activities.

Plan, schedule and organize work for group ensuring proper distribution and delegation of assignments and efficient utilization of personnel, space and facilities; overall accountability for the requisition, care and maintenance of unit inventory, equipment and supplies.

Perform other related duties incidental to the duties described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work requires completion of an accredited Bachelor's degree in a clinical field such as Nursing, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy or a related field.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of five years of clinical experience, including supervisory experience in home health care.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Current North Carolina licensure or ability to obtain as required by professional discipline.

Membership and participation in professional societies and organizations is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

In-depth knowledge of homecare industry. Maintains knowledge by reviewing literature and attending in-services, seminars, and conferences.

Exhibits effective leadership and management in health care organizations.

Demonstrates extensive knowledge, understanding and ability to work with multi-health systems.

Knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid regulations, JCAHO, and DFS standards.

Computer skills including Word and Excel.

Excellent verbal/written communication skills and organizational/time- management skills.
