General Description of the Job Class

Oversee the planning, coordination the dissemination of news, communications and marketing, to inform and educate the general public, media, faculty, staff and alumni about issues and events at Duke Medicine and about contributions made by Duke Medicine to the advancement of knowledge, medical research and health affairs.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Serve as one of the chief spokespersons for the Chancellor and Duke Medicine.

As the principal strategic communications advisor to the Chancellor, provide guidance on communications strategy for a variety of issues and topics.

Maintain heightened awareness of current and predicted overall trends and developments in health care, local conditions, economic conditions and competitive institutions and develop corporate news, communications and marketing strategies to respond to such trends.

Ensure that the organization's marketing strategies and tactics, including tactical marketing, market research and branding, are closely aligned with and supportive of the broader strategies of the Duke Medicine.

Keep current with latest technologies for communicating with various media and other internal and external constituencies. Provide consultation to Duke Medicine on news, communications and marketing strategies.

Lead the implementation of a positive press and media program. Oversee writing, editing, and production of existing and new communication vehicles for print and broadcast media for internal and external audiences.

Oversee the development and management of the department budget.

Oversee the management of various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance management, disciplinary action, training, career development, etc.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work requires a bachelor's degree in communications, marketing or related field with an advanced degree highly preferred.

Experience

Ten years of related experience is required.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing effective strategic marketing plans.

Thorough and broad understanding of current issues and future challenges facing the healthcare delivery systems
