General Description of the Job Class

As a member of the Duke University Health System senior leader team, the Vice President will oversee the development and execution of a Duke Medicine strategic plan that includes expanding the Health System???s growth in it's service area. The position will lead efforts to establish traditional affiliation and business development initiatives as well as innovative programs, payer strategies, managed care contract negations. These specialized approaches will create opportunities for clinical collaboration in care, research and education. This highly visible role will work collaboratively across the enterprise and externally to enhance the revenue base of the system.

The VP will ensure that contractual obligations and protocols are integrated across Duke Medicine and operationalized across the system. The VP will set the strategic direction, execute and oversee efforts to establish programmatic affiliations and relationships with healthcare providers across the continuum of care. Collaborate on identifying the appropriate contractual vehicle to achieve the objectives within Duke's core service area, as well as throughout the United States. The VP will facilitate collaboration between DUHS, the PDC, and other providers and payers to plan and execute a Duke-centric, regional clinically integrated network of services.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- The VP will develop, monitor and oversee execution of Network and Business Development strategy. Work collaboratively with senior Duke Medicine leadership to develop new models of healthcare relationships across services that will connect community providers, Duke Medicine facilities and providers to support DUHS growth initiatives. The VP will serve as a key strategist in preparing DUHS for the changes with changes to the healthcare environment.

- The VP will maintain up-to-date information and knowledge of both affiliated hospitals and negotiation of professionals to meet payer contracting objectives. The VP is responsible for daily operations of Business Development and payor strategy initiatives, oversight and fulfillment joint ventures, and provision of overall accountability and compliance with contractual obligations for all joint ventures, clinical, research and program development and operational support agreements.

- The VP will develop and maintain network of relationships with executives in other integrated health systems that are responsible for services and business development. The VP may be responsible for maintaining close working relationships with administrators, medical staff leadership and trustees in primary, secondary and remote market affiliations. Work closely with Duke Medicine staff to develop strategies that support the development of new business for the system.

In order to fulfill the responsibilities set forth above, the Vice President should maintain open communication with leaders of the following Duke Medicine organizations, programs and individuals: Duke University School of Medicine, DUHS Chief Medical Officer, DUHS Chief Patient Safety Officer, DUHS Facility Presidents, Duke Primary Care, Ambulatory and PDC Leadership, Hospital and Health System Finance, DUH CSUs Medical and Administrative Leadership, Managed Care Contracting, Strategic and Enterprise Wide Planning, Marketing and Communications, Development, Risk Management, University Counsel , Continuing Medical and Graduate Medical Education, Alumni Office, Patient Revenue Management Organization (PRMO),Accountable Care, Clinically Integrated Networks, Patient Centered Medical Home and others as appropriate.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in Business, Finance, Hospital Administration, or related field is preferred.

Experience

The work requires 15 years progressive leadership experience. Successful past experience managing complex change initiatives in a health-care environment is required. Will be comfortable working in a collaborative and consensus building environment and have the ability to work with diverse constituents. The VP must have vision, initiative, stamina, intelligence, strong interpersonal skills and be result oriented. Must have the ability to effectively operate strategically and have strong detail orientation. The ability to achieve financial and business objectives is critical.

The individual for this position will have strong communication skills and a proven track record of managing relationships well, both internally and externally. Will be comfortable working in a collaborative and consensus building environment and have the ability to work with diverse constituents. Must be strategic and able to see the big picture as well as have a strong detail orientation. The ability to achieve financial and business objectives is critical.
