General Description of the Job Class

Provides routine acupuncture and Oriental medicine therapy services to Duke Integrative Medicine patients/clients.

An acupuncturist may perform or prescribe the use of acupuncture, oriental massage, acupressure, nutrition, diet, and additional practices of Oriental Medicine as delineated under North Carolina acupuncture licensure to promote, maintain, and restore health.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Provides acupuncture and Oriental medicine services to Duke IM patients/clients that are safe, appropriate and effective.

Effectively communicates with the Duke IM interdisciplinary team. Attends and contributes to Duke IM patient care conferences. Consults with appropriate treatment staff regarding treatment plans when necessary.

Effectively communicates and explains procedures appropriate to patient/client needs and preferences.

Performs and documents initial health history, assessment, and evaluation of patient/client.

Performs and documents all sessions performed according to established guidelines.

Practices appropriate acupuncture techniques.

Maintains patient/client confidentiality and sensitivity during all patient/client interactions; reports any unusual patient/client interactions to supervisor immediately.

Develops, reviews, updates and implements educational materials to meet the needs of patients/clients, the general public, and professionals.

Participates in Duke IM clinical research projects.

Participates in teaching students and residents at Duke University and Duke IM.

Teaches classes through Duke IM.

Participates in the Duke IM quality assurance program.

Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Must provide evidence of successful graduation (Master Level) from an ACAOM accredited acupuncture college or training program that is approved by the North Carolina Acupuncture Licensing Board.

Doctorate of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (DAOM) from an ACAOM accredited college is strongly preferred.

Must provide evidence of completion of at least 30 hours of continuing education in acupuncture over the last two-year period.

Experience

At least 3 years of clinical experience in providing acupuncture services.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Current and valid licensure as Licensed Acupuncturist (LAc) by North Carolina Acupuncture Licensing Board.

Current ability to meet or exceed all criteria for Duke Medical Center Licensed Acupuncturist privileging.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of Oriental Medicine, theory, principles, techniques and methods.

Strong organization and communication skills.

Self directed and motivated to function independently, and effective as a team member.

A commitment to the vision of Duke Integrative Medicine.
