General Description of the Job Class

Provides routine acupuncture services to Duke Health patients. The acupuncturist may perform or prescribe treatments including acupuncture, acupressure, East Asian Massage techniques, gua sha, cupping, herbal topicals, nutrition and dietary guidance, in addition to other practices of integrative medicine as authorized under North Carolina acupuncture licensure, with the goal of promoting, maintaining, and restoring health.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Provides acupuncture to patients that is safe, appropriate and effective.

Communicate effectively with the interdisciplinary team and participate in patient care conferences. Consult with treatment staff regarding patient care plans as needed.

Explains procedures appropriate to patient needs and preferences.

Performs and documents initial health history, assessment, and evaluation of patient.

Conducts and documents all treatment sessions in accordance with established guidelines.

Apply appropriate acupuncture techniques in line with professional standards including Clean Needle Technique.

Maintains patient confidentiality and sensitivity; reports any unusual patient interactions to supervisor immediately.

Develops, reviews, updates and implements educational materials for patients, the public, and healthcare professionals.

Teach and mentor students and residents at Duke Health.

Performs other related duties as assigned that support the mission and goals of Duke Health.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Must provide evidence of successful graduation (Master Level) from an ACAOM accredited acupuncture college or training program that is approved by the North Carolina Acupuncture Licensing Board.

Doctorate of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (DAOM) from an ACAOM accredited college is strongly preferred.

Must provide evidence of completion of at least 30 hours of continuing education in acupuncture over the last two-year period.

Experience

At least 3 years of clinical experience in providing acupuncture services.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Current and valid licensure as Licensed Acupuncturist (LAc) by North Carolina Acupuncture Licensing Board.

Current ability to meet or exceed all criteria for Duke Medical Center Licensed Acupuncturist privileging.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of East Asian Medicine, including theory, principles, techniques and methods.

Able to run multiple treatment rooms at a time.

Strong organizational and communication skills.

Self-directed and motivated to function independently, while also being effective as a team member.

A commitment to the vision of Duke Health.
