General Description of the Job Class

The position of Assistant Controller will be responsible for all aspects of the areas assigned within DUHS Corporate Finance. The primary responsibility will be to direct the day-to-day, monthly, quarterly and annual fiscal cycles within the Vice President, Corporate Controller and Chief Accounting Officer's organization. This position requires consistent and continuous coordination on the many finance and accounting shared services provided by University Finance and other University administrative functions.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

General Accounting:

- Analyze recurring business unit financial performance reporting

- Analyze actual financial results and budget variances for profit and loss, balance sheets and statements of cash flows

- Provide full support for annual balance sheet and cash flow budgeting, to complement P&L and capital budgeting by entity Finance units

- Ensure that reporting requirements are fully met

- Control a rigorous close process with clear accountabilities, a well communicated calendar, performance metrics and cross-functional participation

- Coordinate close process and accounting system structure with University.

Consolidation/Allocation:

- Oversee DUHS consolidation process and "top down" external audit and ensure coordination with University Audit

- Develop/Select/Maintain reporting and consolidation process/software to support reporting needs and timeline

- Provide high level of customer service designing custom, entity-level reporting books

Reporting:

- Analyze and direct consolidated financial reports for DUHS and entities

- Prepare Board presentations and reports for senior management using appropriate technology

- Ensure timely and accurate financial and statistical reporting

- Ensure that all annual external financial reporting and debt compliance reporting is completed accurately and timely

- Maintain an up-to-date and anticipatory knowledge of upcoming accounting, compliance and financial reporting changes.

Policies and Procedures:

- Establish policies and procedures for standardized/consistent accounting across all DUHS entities

- Monitor new accounting literature and design policies and procedures for timely and controlled implementation

- Ensure that business unit staff are educated and trained on DUHS Finance and Accounting policies and procedures

Systems:

- Establish internal financial controls used to maintain integrity of all DUHS charts of accounts

- Collaborate with the University on internal financial controls used to maintain integrity of all charts of accounts

- Serve as DUHS representative for changes/upgrades/new functionality in the SAP system

- Management of Shared Services with DU

- Responsible for ensuring that DU financial operations maintains adequate systems and appropriate internal controls to support DUHS??? required service levels (as specified in the 1999 Operating Agreement):

General:

- Lead the DUHS Closing process

- Serve as GAAP and FASB technical resource in conjunction with external auditors

- Review work of lower-level employees and assist in training of new employees

- Recommend various personnel actions, including hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, vacations schedules and other pertinent tasks

- Maintain application skills (SAP R/3 "Super User", Hyperion, etc.) necessary for efficient data compilation and reporting

Cash Accounting/Treasury:

- Develop and enforce strong internal controls and procedures regarding collection and accounting for cash

- Direct reconciliation of cash receipts and accounts

- Coordinate cash accounting and reporting activities with the PRMO and PDC

- Direct periodic debt profile reporting and monitoring - provide analysis as necessary

- Participate in offering document creation - facilitate Appendix A creation

Cash Flow Projections and Reporting:

- Prepare daily cash and swap MTM reports

- Prepare and maintain monthly cash flow and working capital projections for DUHS

- Ensure that DU Treasury provides adequate service levels and reasonable controls over the debt payment cycle

- Investment of DUHS Reserve Funds

- Coordinate directly with DUMAC on the accounting and reporting for the DUHS single-owner investment pool (HSP) managed by DUMAC

- Provide liquidity and collateral management, working directly with DUMAC on DUHS treasury security and other transactions

Durham Casualty Company (DUHS Insurance Captive):

- Responsible for the day-to-day coordination of essentially all Durham Casualty Company (DCC) transactions and activities.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business or related field. MBA preferred.

Experience

5-10 years of experience and a CPA is desired. The employee should have financial and managerial reporting experience with GAAP, FASB and other internal standards. The position should also demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills with attention to detail. Strong PC skills in applications such as Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint are important, as well as the ability to perform in a high pressure environment, meeting frequent deadlines under extended work hours.
