General Description of the Job Class

The Assistant Vice President, Nursing is responsible for leading key programs and initiatives that address overall Quality, Safety and Outcomes within an assigned Service Line, or across Duke University Health System (DUHS). Responsibilities may also include leading DUHS Nursing initiatives in Education, Clinical and Advanced Practice, Research, Quality, Recruitment & Retention, Workforce Development, and Administrative Systems.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Collaboration & Partnership: Develop and foster effective collaboration across DUHS / DUHS service line programs, clinical departments, academic departments/divisions, and other affiliated services to ensure an integrated approach to providing clinical care, and fulfilling our clinical, research and educational goals and objectives. Foster productive physician faculty relationships to assure collaborative problem solving and support physician leadership's clinical initiatives.

Management & Leadership: Oversee all facets of human resource management for reporting and ensure that all applicable institutional policies and procedures are effectively managed. Provide administrative direction to management staff within areas of responsibility including supporting plan development, priority-setting, decision-making, and professional development.

Strategic Planning: Participate in the creation and implementation of a visionary strategic agenda for nursing that links clinical practice, education and research, and is tied to the DUHS strategic plan. In collaboration with other entity/ DUHS service line leadership will participate in and oversee the development of the vision/strategic plan and the organizational. Partner with key stakeholders across the system to create short- and long-term strategies that will positively impact quality, safety, and the patient experience. Establish systems to ensure appropriate levels of staff and manage budgets effectively.

Finance & Growth: In collaboration with colleagues in the Patient Revenue Management Organization (PRMO) and Finance, responsible for the revenue cycle and billing processes (where applicable) as well as improving fiscal and operational performance. Collaborates with other leaders to ensure adequate financial resources are available to fulfill the vision of excellence for clinical/support operations. Establishes and maintains effective internal controls. Provide significant input and direction with regard to building and/or renovating clinical facilities as needed.

Operational Oversight: Identify areas of potential care or programmatic redesign and lead initiatives to meet DUHS service line or operational objectives of improved efficiencies, effectiveness, and patient experience.

Nursing Practice: The Assistant Vice President, Nursing is responsible for developing, supporting and sustaining a comprehensive, evidence- based nursing professional practice model and will assume accountability for the outcomes of nursing practice across the health system. Create an environment that supports the advancement of professional nursing and advanced practice and the development of a robust workforce to insure the ability of the entity/DUHS service line to meet future needs for professional staff. Standardize, develop, and ensure the appropriate translation of evidence-based practice into daily practice throughout multiple sites. Lead initiatives that advance nursing, advanced practice and interdisciplinary care, resulting in improved patient-care outcomes through the implementation of evidence-based practice and collaborative practice.

Compliance & Regulatory: Maintain compliance with all relevant legislative and regulatory rules and requirements established by state and federal agencies as well as those of voluntary accrediting bodies to ensure continued compliance. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Master's degree in nursing in area of specialty required. Doctorate preferred.

Experience

Seven years of progressive nursing leadership experience including at least 5 years of experience at the leadership level, preferably in the area of assignment.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina.

Nurses hired into leadership positions must obtain a nursing leadership certification within one year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to lead effectively in a matrixed organization requiring high levels of collaboration, sound judgment and significant operational and practice management expertise. Knowledge of physician practice management, clinical operational issues and research practice that contribute to effective and efficient care structures and processes. Knowledge of health care payment systems and sound financial management practices. Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulation. Demonstrate a high level of responsibility, ethical practice, sensitivity to a diverse patient population and adherence to legal and regulatory requirements. Build strong performance around quality and patient experience and continually drive for improvement. Assure effective communication of initiatives within and across relevant internal and external audiences.
