General Description of the Job Class

The Director Nursing Services, DUHS is responsible for overseeing activities within a DUHS Nursing Services department. Reporting to an Assistant Vice President for Nursing, the Director will manage key department programs and initiatives and serve as the Nursing subject matter expert for that area. Areas of oversight and expertise may include: Nursing Practice, Magnet Coordination, Clinical Education, Research, Quality & Safety, Advanced Practice, Administrative Systems, Workforce Development, Workforce Recruitment & Retention, etc.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Collaboration & Partnership --

Partner with representatives from DUHS entities & service lines, clinical departments, academic departments/divisions, and other affiliated services to ensure an integrated approach to providing clinical care, and fulfilling clinical, research and educational goals and objectives.

Coordinate collaborative activities across disciplines, departments, and entities to achieve and implement care redesign and programmatic initiatives.

Serve as a role model and resource for professional colleagues. Participate in leadership activities such as committees, professional organizations, publishing, teaching and research.

Management & Leadership --

Oversee all facets of human resource management for assigned department (interviewing, onboarding, evaluation, development plans, corrective action, etc.) and ensure that all applicable institutional policies and procedures are effectively managed.

Direct, lead, and evaluate a multidisciplinary workforce to ensure the provision of clinically competent, efficient, coordinated, and compassionate care and customer service to patients.

Provide development opportunities for direct reports.

Finance & Growth --

Coordinate the resource needs for areas of responsibility, including reviewing and approving budgetary recommendation, managing department budgetary decisions, and preparing variance analyses.

Operational Oversight --

Provide direct reports with department goals and priorities that are congruent with DUHS strategic plans, including the DUHS Nursing Strategic Plan.

Develop tactical plans, in partnership with direct reports, to assure successful execution of the strategic plan for their area of responsibility within DUHS.

Identify areas of potential care or programmatic redesign and coordinate initiatives to meet DUHS service line or operational objectives of improved efficiencies, effectiveness, and patient experience.

Provide oversight and direction in establishing and maintaining a system for measuring the effectiveness and efficiencies of activities in area of responsibility.

Nursing Practice --

Create an environment that supports the advancement of professional nursing and advanced practice and the development of a robust workforce to insure the ability of the entity/DUHS service line to meet future needs for professional staff

Standardize, develop, and ensure the appropriate translation of evidence-based practice into daily practice for assigned department. Lead initiatives within assigned department which advance nursing, advanced practice and interdisciplinary care, resulting in improved patient-care outcomes through the implementation of evidence-based practice and collaborative practice.

Compliance & Regulatory --

Maintain compliance with all relevant legislative and regulatory rules and requirements established by state and federal agencies as well as those of voluntary accrediting bodies to ensure continued compliance.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. councils within the organization.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Master's degree required. Bachelor's degree in Nursing required.

Experience

Seven years of progressive nursing leadership experience including at least 4 years of experience at the leadership level, preferably in the area of assignment

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina.

Nurses hired into leadership positions must obtain a nursing leadership certification within one year of hire.
