General Description of the Job Class

This position will provide comprehensive legal counsel to the DHIP administration including regulatory coding and compliance, physician contracting and affiliations, and other laws affecting physician practices. This position will also provide advice, counsel and direction to Associate DHIP Counsel, and will be responsible for the management of all activities of the DHIP in the General Counsel's absence.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Furnish high level of professional legal service to the Duke Health Integrated Practice (DHIP). Provide legal support on physician affiliations, health care transactions, and regulatory compliance.

Advise the DHIP on compliance with state and federal health care laws and regulations, including Stark, Anti-Kickback, and HIPAA.

Engage and manage outside counsel to represent the DHIP.

Staff key work groups and committees in areas of practice as assigned. Provide guidance and assistance to the DHIP General Counsel in a highly collaborative fashion.

In coordination with the DHIP General Counsel, develop and monitor departmental budget for the DHIP Office of Legal Counsel.

Oversee and supervise DHIP Associate Counsel and Paralegal staff for the Department.

In coordination with the DHIP General Counsel, meet regularly and coordinate with the Associate General Counsel attorneys on allocation of staffing resources, project planning, and engagement of outside counsel.

Meet regularly with DHIP department administrators and senior leadership regarding legal needs and opportunities to improve the provision of legal services.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Juris Doctor from an American Bar Association accredited law school.

Experience

Minimum of 8 years of experience as an attorney

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Licensed to practice law in the State of North Carolina.
