General Description of the Job Class

The Podiatrist provides routine health maintenance, management of chronic conditions, and management of acute illness. Performs diagnostic, preventive and/or therapeutic podiatric services. Duties also include providing appropriate referrals to other providers for problems identified by health assessments, assisting administration in planning for delivery of Podiatric medicine as requested and providing consultation to other providers as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Perform an appropriate medical history and examination of the patient.

Assess patient's Foot & Ankle condition and develop a treatment plan.

Diagnose and treat disorders, diseases and injuries of the foot and lower leg.

Treatment of complex diabetic foot infections in accordance with evidence-based protocols.

General podiatry treating forefoot and some rear foot pathology such as hallux valgus, hammer toes, ankle instability, soft tissue or boney pathology.

Order and prescribe treatment by physical medicine and therapy.

Document care and treatment provided in a legible format.

Communicate with facility Administration regarding patient conditions or concerns.

Treats conditions such as corns, calluses, ingrown nails, tumors, bunions, cysts and abscesses.

Participates in patient care audits for quality assurance and utilization review to maintain and improve patient care standard of excellence.

Correct deformities by means of plaster casts and strapping.

Advises patients about treatments and foot care techniques to prevent future problems.

Keep abreast of emerging models in health care delivery; identify and define new and innovative strategies to achieve business goals and objectives.

Ensure compliance with local city, state, and federal regulations.

Provide medical orders for prescription refills, administration of medications, ancillary testing, and/or referrals.

Review ancillary test results and coordinates notification to the patient.

Completes appropriate paperwork to comply with insurance and reimbursement guidelines.

Completes all documentation and paperwork in a timely manner.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from an accredited program. Prospective candidates must be Board Certified/Board eligible in Podiatry.

Experience

Required: Experience is desirable, but not required.

Preferred: At least 2 years experience (post Board eligibility requirements) in a position where clinical experience was gained.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Chosen candidates must either have a current North Carolina Medical License or be eligible for application.

Current DEA certification required.

CPR certification required (must be obtained within 30 days of employment).
