General Description of the Job Class

The EVP, COO is responsible for the health system clinical enterprise. This position is responsible for promoting and championing superior operating performance and fostering, engendering, and implementing a culture of excellence in professionalism and team-based delivery of clinical services. The EVP, COO will engage, develop, and lead a group of Hospital Presidents, ambulatory executives, and functional service line leaders to elevate operational and financial performance of the health system.

The EVP, COO interacts and maintains collaborative relations with members of the executive leadership team internally, while encouraging and overseeing the development of organizational-wide collaborative programs in clinical care, education, research, and community health. The EVP, COO will build trusted relationships with Clinical Department Chairs and other faculty practice leaders. This position will establish a culture of continuous learning and play a key role in engaging front- line employees, senior leaders, and board members in the importance of system-wide operational excellence and high value care delivery. The EVP, COO will exude financial and business acumen to competitively position this academic health system for future success, amidst the quickly evolving healthcare industry trends.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Developing a High Performing Team: Recruits, retains, and develops a diverse team of operational and clinical leaders across the academic health system. Fosters a vibrant culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion at all levels of the organization.

Setting a Transformative Strategy: Develops and executes organizational- wide strategy in areas of oversight to achieve key business objectives.

Aligning Systems of Care and Driving Seamless Integration of Care: Provides leadership and direction for system-level clinical operations through Senior Vice Presidents, Vice Presidents, Associate Vice Presidents, and faculty practice leaders, while also partnering with Department Chairs.

Leading Clinical Excellence: Manages the health system's efforts to design and deliver remarkable, high value, personalized, and precise care, powered by advanced data sciences, clinical innovation, and a culture of kindness.

Building Trusted Relationships Across Duke Health: Establishes trust and credibility across Duke Health, while nurturing relationships with the Clinical Department Chairs, the Private Diagnostics Clinic, the Dean of Duke University School of Medicine, and the Board of Directors.

Implementing Digital Health: Leverages data and analytics in organizational decision-making, while also deploying digital health strategies to improve patient and provider experience.

Ensuring Financial Health, Affordability, and Regulatory Compliance: Ensures compliance with all regulations governing health care delivery and the rules of accrediting bodies, by continually monitoring the operations of the hospital and implementing changes when required.

Represents Duke University Health System, Duke Health, and Duke University to the Community and External Partners: Represents the organization by embodying the values and mission of the organization to the external market and community.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

A degree in Medicine from an accredited medical school is required; additional education in medical management, public health, healthcare administration or business is preferred.

Experience

A minimum of 10 years of experience in a senior-level officer role, ideally within a complex, multi-site, integrated, healthcare delivery system.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Leadership experience in a complex academic environment, balancing the mission of clinical care, teaching, and research is strongly preferred.

- Health system-level senior leadership experience is preferred.

- Demonstrated ability to motivate, inspire trust, and organize people in a team; ability to foster a culture of engagement at all levels of the organization.

- A deep commitment to diversity, and a proven record of building diverse, inclusive organizations.

- Strong understanding and successful track record of optimizing clinical care delivery in both acute care and ambulatory settings. Demonstrated track record of improving quality outcomes, while increasing operating efficiency.

- Business acumen, including a sophisticated knowledge of major financial, regulatory, compliance, ethical, and legal issues affecting the healthcare.
