General Description of the Job Class

Demonstrate proficiency and excellence in skills commensurate with the maximum allowances within the scope of licensure. Maximize the effectiveness, efficiency and quality of patient care in the practice. Optimally, develop an individual optometric practice within the medical/surgical practice.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Clinical

  • Optometric Examinations - Independent patient examinations within the scope of licensure.
  • Clinical support for surgical/medical clinic working in tandem with Ophthalmologist.
  • Timely interpretation of diagnostic tests ordered with appropriate patient notification.
  • Emergency patient examinations.
  • Conducts necessary patient education and communication with patients to enhance quality of care and the overall patient experience.

Contact Lens Department Operations and Management

  • Together, with the Practice Administrator & Optical Manager, create and implement an operating budget for the contact lens department.
  • Provide contact lens examinations and fittings.
  • Oversee contact lens inventory (i.e. trial lenses, retail stock, supplies and solutions).
  • Provide guidelines regarding contact lens instruction, for insertion and removal, to be performed by appointed clinical staff.

Administrative

  • Advise practice administrator of schedule changes one month in advance of conflict.
  • Document all patient encounters in the medical record with appropriate co-signature in accordance with state law, when necessary.
  • Bill for services provided in accordance with state law.

Community Outreach and Practice Growth

  • Participate in practice growth and community outreach activities as needed.

Optical

  • Keep abreast of new lens technology and benefits for patients and help educate the staff.
  • Work with Opticians to improve optical processes and patient satisfaction

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Experience

No work experience required.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Licensed optometrist in the state.

Graduate of accredited optometry program.
