General Description of the Job Class

Responsible for the strategic oversight and operational leadership of Duke University Health System, to ensure the delivery of the highest quality patient care.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

A degree in Medicine from an accredited medical school is required; additional education in medical management, public health, healthcare administration or business is preferred.

Experience

A minimum of 10 years of experience in a senior-level officer role, ideally within a complex, multi-site, integrated, healthcare delivery system.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

N/A

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Leadership experience in a complex academic environment, balancing the mission of clinical care, teaching, and research is strongly preferred.

Health system-level senior leadership experience is preferred.

Demonstrated ability to motivate, inspire trust, and organize people in a team; ability to foster a culture of engagement at all levels of the organization.

A deep commitment to diversity, and a proven record of building diverse, inclusive organizations.

Strong understanding and successful track record of optimizing clinical care delivery in both acute care and ambulatory settings. Demonstrated track record of improving quality outcomes, while increasing operating efficiency.

Business acumen, including a sophisticated knowledge of major financial, regulatory, compliance, ethical, and legal issues affecting the healthcare.

Track record of success managing and/or collaborating with physicians, faculty members, Department Chairs, and Clinical Chiefs. Position Specification Ref: Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer Duke University Health System

History of success in developing innovative, effective business partnerships and structures with outside entities including provider groups.

Expertise in leveraging data and analytics to inform projections and decision-making; experience leveraging digital health and innovation to continuously improve patient and clinician experiences.
