General Description of the Job Class
The Nursing Course Instructor Faculty member is responsible for delivering high-quality and evidenced based education to nursing students through classroom instruction, clinical/lab supervision, and mentorship. This role involves developing and implementing curricula, assessing student performance, and contributing to the academic community.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
- Teaching: Conduct lectures, seminars, and laboratory sessions in nursing courses. Utilize sound didactic theory and principles of andragogy. Instructs student nurses in the theoretical and clinical aspects of the practice of nursing. Prepares, administers and grades examinations to determine student performance and achievement. Assists students through observational and participative experiences to apply nursing theory, the nursing process, clinical judgment and nursing techniques in clinical/lab settings. Instructs students and facilitates discussions about accepted methods of nursing practice including professional aspects of nursing, theories of physiology and psychodynamics, assessment of functional health patterns, nursing interventions, and medical, surgical, holistic and allied health treatments.
- Clinical/Lab Supervision: Actively oversee and guide students during lab/clinical rotations, ensuring that they gain practical experience and skills.
- Curriculum Development: Collaborate with Course Lead faculty to develop and organize course schedules, syllabi, and instructional materials. Participate in the design, review, and updating of nursing curricula and instructional materials. Strives continuously to improve the quality of student nursing instruction.
- Student Assessment: Evaluate student performance through exams, assignments, and clinical/lab evaluations. Maintains necessary records to indicate student progress. Consults with Course Lead Faculty and other team members regarding student progression.
- Advising: Provide academic and career advising to students, supporting their educational and professional goals.
- Research: Engagement in scholarly activities, including research, publications, and presentations is encouraged.
- Collaboration: Work with colleagues to enhance the nursing program and participate in departmental and faculty meetings. Ability to coordinate instructional experiences with nursing staff personnel. Participates with other faculty members and student committees in planning and coordinating extracurricular activities to promote the cultural, physical and social development of students. Participates in quality improvement activities in both the college and corporation.
- Professional Development: Stay current with advancements in nursing practice and education through ongoing professional development. Serves on various professional and faculty committees. Advisor to student organizations.
- Compliance: Ensure all academic activities comply with institutional policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements. Assist with the preparation of reports required by national and state accrediting agencies.
- Perform related work as required.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education
Master's degree in Nursing required, Doctorate preferred.
Experience
Minimum of 3 years of full-time clinical nursing experience, with at least one year in an educational or instructional role in an accredited nursing program, for a total of four years. Experience in curriculum development and instruction design preferred.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification
Active, unencumbered RN license in the state of North Carolina. Meets the requirements of the North Carolina State Board of Nursing within 18 months of employment (NCAC 36.0318).
Maintains current BLS certification; skills and knowledge required for the clinical setting where the clinical practicum is conducted. (i.e.: age-specific competencies, glucometer, etc.). Advanced certifications in nursing education or specialty areas preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong teaching abilities, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and proficiency in using educational technology. Familiarity with accreditation processes and standards preferred.
