General Description of the Job Class

The VP, Women's Health Service Line is a senior leadership position responsible for advancing the strategic, operational, and administrative excellence of Duke Health's Women's Health services and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. This role integrates oversight of clinical care, research, education, and operations, ensuring seamless collaboration and optimal outcomes across all domains. The position will have a matrixed reporting structure to the Chair of OBGYN, the President of Acute Care Services for Duke University Health System, and the SVP, Physician Practice and Ambulatory Services who is also the President, Duke Health Integrated Practice.

Operating in a highly collaborative environment, this position will work with health system and academic leaders, as well as external stakeholders, to drive innovation, enhance operational efficiency, and support market growth. It will lead the development and execution of programs that enhance patient experiences and optimize outcomes within Duke Health's Women's Service Line. This service line includes the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, including its general Ob/Gyn practices and the Divisions of Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS), Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility (REI), Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery, ambulatory clinics, the fetal diagnostic center, labor and delivery and inpatient care across Duke Health, and related services. This role will collaborate with leaders of other service lines or units to promote seamless, efficient, and effective care across the healthcare continuum.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Strategic Leadership & Vision

- Establish vision, direction, strategy, and culture for the Women's Health Service Line, supporting Duke Health???s mission.

- Serve as strategic advisor and consultant to Duke Health Senior Leadership for the advancement of the Women's Service Line and Department of OBGYN

- Develop and manage annual work plans aligned with Duke Health's strategic and operational priorities.

- Collaborate with senior leadership on short- and long-term planning, growth initiatives, and community relationships.

- Support efforts to grow the service line's clinical enterprise, including geographic expansion, new program development, referring physician relationships, and recruiting.

- Foster professional relationships in the community and develop collaborative relationships with regional partners.

Operational Excellence

- Direct operations to achieve strategic, financial, and operational plans for clinical excellence, patient experience, access, and high- value care.

- Lead development and implementation of systems, processes, and technological advancements to deliver optimal service quality and patient- and family-centered care.

- Drive operational efficiency through process improvement, resource optimization, and change management.

- Advance efficiency while promoting quality and safety, aiming for zero harm. Review relevant clinical and quality performance metrics for service line teams including high severity safety events and voluntary reporting signals; participate in root cause and failure mode analyses to guide improvements.

- Maintain Joint Commission Accreditation standards and DFS facility codes/standards.

- Establish schedules, task assignments, manpower allocation, space, and equipment to ensure conformance with commitments, goals, and objectives.

Clinical, Academic, and Research Integration

- Oversee integrated programs across clinical, research, and educational domains to ensure excellence in patient outcomes, operational efficiency, and innovation.

- Manage operations of clinical services and support academic programs within the Women's Health portfolio.

- Oversee departmental academic activities, including residency and fellowship programs, and research initiatives.

- Provide administrative direction and coordination in the formulation, interpretation, and administration of current and long- range policies, procedures, and programs within the School of Medicine.

Financial and Resource Management

- Lead all aspects of budget development, forecasting, and management in coordination with SOM, DUHS, and Duke Health Integrated Practice

- Fiscal responsibility and oversight of the Department's financial teams across all three missions-clinical, research, and education.

- Serve as the Department's principal advisor on cost allocation, funds flow, and the financial sustainability of programs and initiatives.

- Plan budget needs by analyzing short- and long-term plans, projecting support from multiple funding sources.

- Establish incentives and performance goals utilizing tools such as wRVU per CFTE, patient visits, receipts, and net income.

- Determine fiscal requirements, make projections, prepare budgets, monitor and reconcile expenditures, and ensure compliance with policies and procedures.

- Lead the service line and department's reporting and business intelligence efforts, ensuring timely and actionable insights across missions in alignment with organization's standards for data reporting.

- Lead resource planning related to staffing, space, facilities, and equipment across clinical, research, and administrative functions.

- Collaborate with central offices and hospital leadership on space management, emergency preparedness, and capital planning.

Team Leadership & Development

- Represent departmental chair/leader in meetings, conferences, and other affairs of an administrative nature.

- Direct and mentor multidisciplinary teams, fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture.

- Recommend for appointment and renewal unit/program directors within the service line and oversee their effort and performance.

- Direct and supervise staff; manage personnel activities; provide guidance and recommendations.

- Maintain liaisons with all levels of administration, faculty, and outside organizations to coordinate business, accomplish directives, and facilitate the resolution of problems.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, business administration, or related field required; Master's degree strongly preferred.

Experience

Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare, with significant exposure to women's services or academic medical centers.

Proven track record in managing complex operations, including physician practice management, academic programs, research initiatives, and administrative oversight of large departments.

Experience in organizations where continuous improvement is part of the culture.
