General Description of the Job Class
The VP, Heart and Vascular Services is a key senior leader for DUHS. This role has responsibility across DUHS for strategy development and implementation, marketing priorities, health system integration of heart services, School of Medicine Division/Health System alignment, daily operations and relationship management and quality oversight for 7 hospital affiliate sites. In total this scope represents approximately $350M in net patient revenue and greater than 1,100 FTEs across inpatient/ outpatient units, procedural labs, non-invasive imaging, perfusion, respiratory, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, patient scheduling, cardiovascular informatics and registry functions.
The VP, Heart and Vascular Services reports to the DUHS Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer for system-related responsibilities and to the President of DUH and SVP for DUHS for daily operations at DUH and will have responsibility also to the Heart Center co-directors, the Division Chiefs of Cardiology and Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
The VP, Heart and Vascular Services will have responsibility for planning, directing and coordinating initiatives around: Quality & Patient Safety Service Line Growth Patient Experience Physician Integration Consistency of Practice Strategy Content expert across health system
The VP, Heart and Vascular Services will assist in the further development of this service line in concert with the clinical chiefs, with the ultimate goal to ensure DUHS continues as a recognized premier provider of heart and vascular services worldwide. Position will help develop and formalize an integrated service line approach throughout DUHS.
The VP, Heart and Vascular Services will identify opportunities to grow the Service Line. The ideal candidate will have both an entrepreneurial spirit and track record of developing and growing service lines combined with a detail orientation and strong operations skill set.
This position works collaboratively with the Hospital administrators and operational leaders at all sites.
Establish oneself as a highly credible, approachable leader who is proactive, diplomatic, trusted and committed to leading a contemporary, quality-driven service line. Become known as a facilitator and champion of new clinical initiatives, refining approaches to existing clinical programs and performance improvement strategies.
Establish a vision for heart and vascular services that is consistent with the DUHS patient-centered approach toward care and continue to focus efforts on exemplary quality and outcomes. Highlight Duke's uniqueness as a clinical and research powerhouse.
Ensure accountability through the assessment and/or improvement of dashboards with key metrics to help the service line drive quality, efficiency and to make sound business decisions, based on data.
Establish greater rigor around service line infrastructure including investing in enhancing marketing and supporting services for the expanding network services.
Build collaborative network relationships with community physician colleagues and find ways to partner with these colleagues to better serve the greater local and regional population as a whole. This mutually respectful and collaborative partnership should focus on their success in their local area and be present as a resource for care of the more complex patients.
Cultivate a strong sense of openness within the service line by identifying and listening to priorities and concerns of the physicians and staff. Be highly responsive, visible and communicative in addressing the concerns of others. Work closely with the providers to build a trusting partnership and support.

With the addition of new markets, establish common dashboards/benchmarks to measure performance in several areas, including revenue growth, quality, physician satisfaction and patient experience.
Develop an organizational structure to support the strategic and operational plan. Assess the current resources and make changes as necessary to create a structure that supports efficient, high-quality care in a value-based environment.
Promote increased coordinated care and vision across the service line, understanding the separate finances and structures for the clinical departments yet the need to function together.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education
MBA, MHA or related Master's degree required. Clinical background viewed as a plus.
Experience
Minimum ten years of senior health care leadership experience in an academic medical center or complex health system with a deep appreciation for systemness and building strong network affiliations.
Progressive administrative experience, preferably in heart and vascular services, where the position has required in-depth knowledge of operations, finance and business development.
Demonstrated success in service line growth is strongly preferred.
