General Description of the Job Class
The Vice President of Neuroscience Service Line serves as the senior administrative leader responsible for strategic planning, operational execution, and financial performance of Duke Health's Neuroscience programs. This role partners with clinical and administrative leaders to advance patient care, research, and education across a complex academic health system. The VP ensures excellence in quality, growth, and innovation while fostering collaboration among multidisciplinary teams and aligning with Duke Health's mission.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Strategic Leadership & Growth
Lead in collaboration with the Physician VP SL, relevant Chairs, Medical Directors, to advance the clinical, research, and education mission of the Neuroscience Service Line.
Work with the Duke Health leaders to establish and achieve 5-year strategic, operating, and financial objectives for the service line.
Attract and motivate a high-performing team and multidisciplinary leaders.
Lead the annual goal-setting process for departments, system hospitals, and multidisciplinary teams; oversee performance management and corrective actions where necessary.
Anticipate market trends and position Duke Neuroscience as a national leader in patient care and research.
Represent the service line in strategic planning forums and advise senior leadership on priorities and innovations.
Operational & Financial Oversight
Provide day-to-day leadership and financial oversight of all clinical operations (inpatient, outpatient, and ancillary) and relevant non- clinical activities (administrative, philanthropy, marketing, technology, media relations, and other support services) as it relates to the growth and advancement of Neuroscience SL. Direct line accountability for Duke University Hospital operations.
Lead the administrative team, including Directors, ACNO's, Managers, and clinical and non-clinical team members, in day-to-day operations across multiple locations.
Collaborate with Duke Health executive leadership (Presidents, COOs, and other service line VPs) to ensure operational and clinical performance excellence including regulatory preparations, workforce management and incident management.
Develop strategies, implement operational plans, and improve system-wide processes through standardization of care pathways and operational efficiency.
Prepare and execute growth and margin expansion strategies related to inpatient/outpatient volumes, payer mix, access targets, and technical/professional revenue streams (e.g., patient visits, surgeries, procedures, MRIs, sleep lab/tests, EEGs, EMGs, and other related services).
Oversee operational infrastructure, including systems, processes, and personnel, to support rapid growth and program development.
Clinical Quality & Performance
Champion delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care across all settings.
Lead initiatives to improve patient safety, clinical outcomes, and operational efficiency.
Develop and oversee processes to make clinical, performance, and safety data available to relevant parties.
Recommend improvement projects, target-setting and oversee performance of unit/program.
Innovation, Academic & Research Integration
Partner with Department Chairs (Neurology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Anesthesia) and Division Chiefs (Spine and others) to support research, education, and academic initiatives.
Collaborate with key stakeholders to integrate technological advances and innovation into operational processes to improve efficiency and service delivery.
Support ACGME and LCME training programs and integrate academic excellence into clinical operations.
Encourage integration of research and education into clinical operations to enhance patient outcomes and care delivery.
Compliance & Communication
Ensure that all hospital and outpatient activities and operations across all Neuroscience clinical service locations comply with local, state, and federal regulations and laws governing business operations.
Develop and maintain internal control systems to ensure accountability and regulatory compliance.
Oversee and manage process implementation across all departments and multidisciplinary centers, ensuring consistency and operational excellence.
Develop and implement procedures and controls to promote communication and adequate information flow among all stakeholders and departments, within the hospital, across the health system, and with external parties.
Talent Management & Engagement
Recruit, develop, and retain key staff and administrative leaders.
Foster a culture of engagement, mentorship, and professional development for faculty and staff.
Encourage staff and faculty participation in decision-making and collaboration across Duke Health entities.
External Relations & Representation
Serve as a visible representative of Duke Health in the community and with external partners.
Represent the service line in internal and external associations, professional organizations, and government agencies.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education
Master's degree in Health Administration (MHA), Business Administration (MBA), or related field required.
Experience
Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in a hospital or health system of significant size and complexity.
Prior experience as Associate VP, VP, or equivalent in a tertiary care or academic medical center strongly preferred.
Demonstrated expertise in strategic planning, financial stewardship, and operational leadership.
Proven ability to lead in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment; highly adaptable to change.
Neurosciences experience preferred.
