Occupational Summary

Library Intern classification was established for graduate students, generally, but not exclusively, those enrolled in an accredited MLS program, who are interested in pursuing a career in librarianship.

An Library Internship is an opportunity to gain work experience under the guidance of a knowledgeable, experienced, and successful librarian. At the core of any internship is a mutually beneficial relationship, providing learning opportunities for the students in their disciplines or majors and bringing needed skills and experience and assistance to the Libraries' department. Internships are structured so that the academic/educational experiences are a priority.

Work Performed

Library Interns perform a variety of roles related to the work of professional librarianship.

Provides reference services both in person and remotely via chat and e- mail.

Assists with library instruction, including meeting with instructors, selecting materials, teaching classes, and participating in instructional assessment.

Assists with collection development activities such as catalog searching, resource selection, and assisting with collection analysis projects.

Prepares descriptive tools for collections including finding aids and catalog records.

Performs processing of archival and manuscript collections and assists with analyzing their organization, arrangement and preservation needs.

Assists with public programming and other outreach activities such as website development and maintenance, newsletter production, social media, and exhibitions.

Creates research and instruction tools.

Assists librarians with special projects.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree and must currently be enrolled in or a graduate from an accredited advanced degree program.
