Occupational Summary

Must be able to work independently and manage a variety of projects related to animal facilities and equipment. Understands overall project scope, works closely with vendors and users to understand needs, develops plan and monitors progress. Is able to train and supervise others and develop resources to create avenues for large economic savings relating to purchase, repair and maintenance of DLAR major and minor equipment. Must ensure minimal down-time for DLAR equipment, be able to analyze data and interpret high-level technical information, prepare expense projections and manage a large inventory of varying equipment across 16 facilities.

Work Performed

Works closely with vendor and users to assure that environmental monitoring and automatic watering system servicing over 220 animal rooms is working smoothly.

Works closely with vendor and Duke Information technology staff to assure that data server is secure and all security updates are current.

Troubleshoot both Edstrom systems at a factory technician level of expertise.

Responsible for the ordering, cataloging and maintaining over 700 Edstrom -manufactured automatic watering manifolds and drinking valves on a wide variety of caging systems.

Ensure cost savings for Duke when negotiating with Edstrom Inc. regarding factory preventative maintenance program and replacement parts or other services.

Develop innovative methods and practices that will prolong the useful life of sophisticated environmental monitoring and automatic watering systems.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Facilitate the integration of the Edstrom Virtual Server and supervise the increased capacity the server generates to house all of the environmental monitoring sensors in all 14 of DLARs animal facilities.

Work with vendor repair technicians to learn repair of vendor-specific and rack-specific blowers

Supervise the safe operation of the BioResponse tissue digester

Train operation managers and husbandry personnel on the minor routine maintenance facets of husbandry equipment.

Advise DLAR assistant Director and operations managers as requested on purchases of equipment.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires an educational background normally equivalent to a high school education with course work in skilled crafts.

State of NC contractors license in a specific trade may be required or preferred.

 

Experience:

Minimum of six years maintenance and repair experience related to the specific equipment or four years of trades experience with at least one year related experience.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Valid N.C. Driver's license is required.
