Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of skilled duties involved in the design and layout of Duke University's printed publications and communications needs.

Work Performed

Assist in planning and developing Duke University's publications programs; analyze and interpret the requirements for the design and production of a wide range of publications that meet the University's development, public relations and recruitment needs.

Consult with clients and assess their needs, ensuring that design specifications meet specific budget restrictions and deadlines; establish priorities as required.

Research and analyze appropriate background materials to advise clients and to provide an accurate final design.

Determine and prepare graphics specifications in accordance with budgetary limitations.

Participate in the long-range planning of the University's publications programs.

Work independently on a project-by-project basis to anticipate client needs and fulfill internal guidelines. Analyze and select proper paper, ink, type, font, illustrations and printing techniques to be used in total production.

Complete projects using desktop publishing software such as InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat.

Provide design support for websites, including participation in any new design initiatives.

Evaluate other illustrative material regarding space allocation to determine most effective layout.

Maintain liaison with clients and other staff members, as well as vendors (e.g., illustrators, photographers, printers and writers), to communicate job specifications and ensure deadlines are met. Keep abreast of recent developments and technologies in the graphic arts field.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires the ability to perform skilled and creative graphic arts functions generally acquired through an associate's degree in graphic or commercial arts or a related field.

 

Experience:

Work generally requires three years graphic arts or related experience to acquire considerable knowledge of and skill in complex design, layout, and commercial arts methods and techniques and an ability to analyze and interpret art needs of various publications and communications programs. A bachelor's degree in graphic or commercial arts or a related field may be substituted for experience on a 1:1 basis.
