Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of complex tasks involved in editing, proofreading and preparing books, journals and other printed materials for publication.

Work Performed

Perform a variety of complex editing and proofreading tasks to prepare books, technical and non-technical journals and other printed materials for publication.

Edit manuscripts critically as to consistency, clarity, format and grammar.

Ensure conformance with established standards.

Edit indexes; proofread galley proofs and make necessary corrections. Interface with authors and editors to resolve problems and to coordinate reviews of manuscripts.

Prepare related correspondence; make work assignments; assist in the training of new employees.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires a general educational background normally equivalent to a full high school education.

 

Experience:

Work requires four years of experience, at least two of which involve directly related editorial responsibilities, to acquire skills in communications, editing, spelling, and general English rules sufficient to perform complex editorial duties.

A college degree in Journalism, English, or a field of study directly related to the position may be substituted for equivalent experience.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Routine clerical experience may be credited on a 2 for 1 basis in determining hire rate.
