Occupational Summary

Perform skilled work associated with the installation, removal and repair of insulation and firestop systems on Duke University Medical Center equipment, systems and structures.

Work Performed

Perform skilled work associated with installation, removal or repair of insulation and firestop systems on industrial equipment, pipes, ductwork as well as other mechanical systems such as boilers, tanks, hot or cold air ducts or pipes, and heat exchangers.

Determine the amount and types of insulation materials needed, as well as methods of installation, based on factors such as location, surface shape and equipment use; initiate requisitions for materials.

Assist in the removal and sealing off or asbestos insulation following all proper safety procedures.

Read and review blueprints and specifications to determine job requirements, work specifications and material needed.

Troubleshoot problems and perform any re-work, modification or alternate application of insulation material.

Ensure that proper training is completed before performing work activities.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires an educational background normally equivalent to a high school education with course work in skilled crafts or trades.

 

Experience:

Work requires a working knowledge of insulating pipes and equipment normally acquired through 2 years of insulating experience.
