Occupational Summary

Perform routine clerical and general non-technical laboratory duties in a Duke University medical laboratory.

Work Performed

Perform routine clerical and general non-technical laboratory duties in a Duke University medical laboratory to include sorting and filing laboratory requisitions, calculating charges and reporting laboratory results to appropriate medical personnel.

Check incoming specimens for proper identification and sufficient quantity; record patient's name, ward and laboratory tests to be performed; attach laboratory identification number to samples and place samples in centrifuge for separation or sort on counter for technicians.

Verify laboratory test reports and check calculations for accuracy; return errors to technician for test re-run.

Give test results by phone when requested; call in results for surgery or recovery room patients; type results into Medi-Data terminal. Record daily totals of procedures performed; prepare reports of total procedures and income reports.

Maintain files of laboratory requisitions, charge slips, and other laboratory records.

Open, sort and route incoming mail and prepare outgoing mail.

Type requisitions for supplies placing orders both inside and outside the University.

Answer telephone; greet patients and other personnel upon arrival in laboratory.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires knowledge of basic clerical and communication principles generally acquired through a high school education.

 

Experience:

Work requires six months of experience in a related position to become familiar with routine clerical and general non-technical laboratory duties.
