Occupational Summary

Perform telecommunications tasks in operating computerized communication systems at Duke University during a scheduled unsupervised shift following established policies and procedures.

Work Performed

Respond, screen, and relay incoming and outgoing long distance, local and inter-communication calls through use of computerized communication systems to include the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) console, Data General terminal and Operator Services Position System (OSPS). Receive, dispatch and document data to teams in emergencies and/or life threatening situations including, but not limited to, fire alarms, code 5, Poison Control Center, Diver's Alert Network, Life Flight and disaster. Monitor systems to include Advanced Interactive Systems (AIS), building security, fire/air compressor alarm; report telecommunications operating system failures to appropriate personnel to include AT&T and Southern Net; activate 3100 system for backup during system failure. Page personnel whose names appear on master listing; retrieve pages; receive and deliver messages; locate staff members on and off University property; provide operator assisted teleconferencing bridge, including international teleconferencing toll calls. Provide information about the University of students, staff, and the public reviewing sources as necessary including, but not limited to, on-call schedules, research programs/studies, physician rotation and referral, and non- confidential patient information. Maintain and relay current listing of telephone and paging numbers incorporating changes and new assignments as the occur.

Assist in the training of new Communication Center Operators. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires a knowledge of basic grammar, comprehension, and communication principles normally acquired through a high school education.

 

Experience:

Work requires 1 year experience as a Communication Center Operator.
