Occupational Summary

Perform work in construction, renovation and maintenance repairs of plaster, concrete and masonry of all university facilities. Perform work according to the N.C.S.B.C. and provide technical assistance to project managers and direct lower level personnel.

Work Performed

Read blueprints, distinguish between different types of plans.

Perform riggings as in hoist, scaffolding and practice safety guidelines using them.

Identify concrete and finishing terms.

Perform accepted methods of concrete construction.

Use chemicals safely. Identify different types of masonry (brick & block) and uses of each.

Perform proper mixtures of mortar.

Assist masons in assigned work.

Use scaffolding, hand and power tools correctly and safely.

Identify properties and components of concrete. Identify chemical properties of concrete.

Perform basic test on concrete as in slump and strength.

Use equipment in plastering and curing concrete.

Perform safe operation and maintenance requirements.

Able to use different types of joints and reinforcements. Perform scale for ordering concrete.

Perform basic procedures for laying brick and block correctly.

Rework old plaster masonry in ceilings and walls.

Repair marble partitions or replace.

Calculate scaffolding loads, dead loads and live loads. Perform calculation for cantilever and wind loads.

Perform mixing of chemicals as in concrete additives, activators and dyes. Install various types of joints, reinforcements and requirements for them.

Install concrete in different settings and know requirements. Able to move concrete using various equipment, wheel barrows, pumps, and motorized buggy.

Spread concrete using different techniques of finishing and striking of joints.

Perform basic finishing techniques for slabs and horizontal structures, use floats, trowels, edgers and groovers appropriately (manual and power). Cut joints with different type saws.

Able to perform the proper procedures are followed in placing, finishing and curing concrete. Perform correct techniques for protecting concrete in hot and cold weather conditions.

Perform construction of forms, using the correct, using the correct form material, release agents, placement of anchors and embedments and form removal.

Perform safety requirements, especially inspection of reshoring precautions and procedures. Perform application procedures and requirements for various types of surface treatments, dry shakes, self-leveling topping, epoxies and shotcrete.

Perform application of various types of reinforcing steel, metal components and various repair techniques, tuck pointing, brick replacement, crack sealing, waterproofing and stain removal.

Perform estimates from blueprints, quality, quantities of concrete and masonry products.

Operate different types manually and propelled finishing equipment.

Perform estimating skills in materials for concrete, curbs, slabs, wall footings, columns, steps, side walls and driveways.

Perform joint layouts, placing, finishing, curing superflat floors and trouble shooting during placement and finishing.

Perform the correct construction of concrete walls and archways.

Be able to read residential and construction drawings and convert that information into action on the job.

Perform proper techniques, safety requirements and interaction with structural components.

Perform correct procedure for creating openings in concrete and masonry walls, application of insulation and methods of moisture control.

Perform test on masonry materials and insure quality control requirements.

Perform related duties incidental to the work described above.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work required and education/training background normally equivalent to a high school education with course work in skilled crafts or trades, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Completed forklift training.

Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.

 

Experience:

Completion of the requirements for Level 7 Plaster Mason II.

Minimum of five years experience in Plaster and Masonry trade, ability to pass the required test for Level 7 Plaster Mason II, and meet the prerequisites. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
