Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of police duties in enforcing laws to protect lives and Duke University property; as a senior patrol officer, field training officer, and as a fill in for the Deputy Squad Commander during their absence. This assignment is in Uniform patrol and/or investigations, where the corporal will serve as a senior investigator.

Work Performed

Perform a variety of police duties in patrolling assigned area on foot, in police car, or on police bicycle to detect crime and to arrest violators; patrol parking lots, outlying University properties and University buildings to ensure their security; investigate criminal violations in accordance with departmental procedures and law. Serve as senior officer, and field training officer in Uniform Patrol by assisting the Deputy Squad Commander and Squad Commander in all aspects of squad supervision and administration; serve as Acting Deputy Squad Commander in the absence of the Deputy Squad Commander; serve as senior investigator in Investigations by investigating crimes with medium to high solvability and by supervising the work of other investigators on an assigned case.

Regulate pedestrian and vehicular traffic and enforce applicable codes and statutes. Provide emergency ambulance service and temporary first- aid treatment to members of the University community and to visitors; provide emergency escort service to students and staff where necessary.

Prepare and present testimony in court concerning a variety of traffic, criminal and civil matters; coordinate with District Attorney's office at various stages of a criminal investigation.

Provide information about duke University to students, staff and the general public.

Provide law enforcement and security services for special University events.

Assist in the training of new Police Officers as directed by higher authority.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires communication and analytical skills normally acquired through an associate's degree in one of the social sciences and commission as a North Carolina Campus Police Officer under NCGS Chapter 74E or a current commission as a North Carolina law enforcement officer and certification eligibility as a Campus Police Officer under NCGS Chapter 74E.

 

Experience:

Work requires knowledge of law enforcement methods, techniques, and procedures normally acquired through two years of law enforcement experience at the Duke University Police Department.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE A valid North Carolina Driver's license is required.
