The Fossil Preparator is responsible for leading the physical preparation and conservation of vertebrates from North America, Africa and South America housed at the Duke Lemur Center Museum of Natural History. They are responsible for training volunteers, students, and interns in preparation and conservation methods, and overseeing their sustained effort. The Fossil Preparator is expected to stay informed of current best practices in natural history conservation and to experiment with new preparation and conservation methods. The Fossil Preparator will use the digital catalogue to document preparation choices and methods, and work with the Collections Manager to document fossil accession and documentation protocol. Further, the Fossil Preparator will help the Curator communicate the significance of the collection to DLC stakeholders, Duke students, and educators through exhibit design and specimen displays. The Fossil Preparator will produce research- quality epoxy and polyester casts, and will assist in the preparation of 3D printed models for education and research. They are also responsible for leading fossil collection and stabilization during field expeditions.
Perform physical preparation and conservation of fossil vertebrates housed at the DLCMNH.
Produce research-quality epoxy and polyester cast of specimens.
Produce custom housing for storage and display.
Process fossil scans and assist in the processing and mounting of 3D printed models.
Train volunteers, students, and interns to assist in the above duties.
Participate in virtual and extramural outreach events and in the design and construction of exhibit and lab tour materials.
Maintain preparation and casting lab in collaboration with Collections Manager.
Help organize and participate in field work with the DLCMNH Curator, including processing permits, corresponding with local collaborators, and maintaining equipment.
Participate in the generation of original research through collaborations with Duke faculty, DLC researchers, and independent research initiatives.
Learn software necessary to design and implement virtual and on-site exhibit materials.
Education/Training: | Work requires a Bachelor's degree; Master's degree preferred. |
Experience: | Five years of micro-preparation experience, to include two years' experience managing/coaching students and volunteers. Familiarity with languages relevant to the collection (Arabic, Malagsy, French, Spanish). |
