Occupational Summary

Manage a variety of activities involved in the editing and preparation of manuscripts approved for publication by Duke University Press; review work of appropriate staff.

Work Performed

Review approved manuscripts for special copyediting or production problems; contact author with production schedule prepared in consultation with Manager, Production and Design; discuss copyedit process.

Locate, interview and evaluate freelance copyeditors, proofreaders and indexers to process manuscripts; provide technical guidance in editing and proofreading manuscripts; supervise work of various freelancers to ensure quality standards are met by designated deadline.

Maintain liaison between author and freelance copyeditor; check copyeditor's changes against author's changes; assist in resolving differences regarding structure, form and grammar; deep author up to date on schedule, revisions and related matters.

Monitor work of proofreaders ensuring correct galley and page proofs have been produced; make corrections as necessary.

Monitor work of freelance indexers ensuring quality product is prepared by deadline; make modification as necessary. Research manuscript subject as necessary to determine accuracy and completeness.

Coordinate and participate a variety of editorial production activities such as reviewing dust jacket copy and obtaining Cataloging in Publication information from the Library of Congress; perform copy editing, proofreading and indexing tasks as necessary.

Review work of Assistant Managing Editor; ensure manuscripts are on schedule and are fairly distributed; advise on resolution of unique or unusual problems.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

 

Experience:

Work generally requires three years of editorial experience in a publishing or related setting to acquire skills necessary to manage and coordinate a variety of tasks such as copy editing, researching and evaluating technical or scientific manuscripts for accuracy, clarity, content, and completeness, monitoring production schedules, proofreading galleys and page proofs and checking layout, and illustrations.
