Occupational Summary

The Executive Director works to ensure achievement of objectives related to the purposes and goals of the Office of University Scholars and Fellows including support for ten merit scholar programs and support for nationally competitive scholarship outreach and advising. The Executive Director will work closely with the directors and faculty directors of each of the scholarship programs including the Angier B Duke, the Alumni Endowed Scholars, the Benjamin N Duke, the Karsh International Scholars, The MasterCard Foundation Scholars, the Reginaldo Howard Scholarship, the Robertson Scholars Leadership Program, the David M Rubenstein Scholarship, the Trinity Scholarships, and the University Scholars programs. In addition, the Executive Director provides oversight for the Baldwin Scholars Program and the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellows.

Work Performed

Provide overall vision, leadership, coordination, administration, and direction for all activities of the Office of University Scholars and Fellows to include managing, supervising and providing direction and support for three directors, two associate directors, one senior program coordinator and eight other full-time staff of the program.

Work in tandem with the Associate Director for Merit Scholar Programs (MSP), Undergraduate Admissions, and faculty directors in the annual process to recruit, interview, and select new cohorts of merit scholars.

Coordinate the support for staff of each of the 9 of the 10 merit scholarship programs (MSP).

With the Associate Director and Program Coordinator for Nationally Competitive Scholarships (NCS), conduct outreach to the broader Duke student body about the opportunities afforded through NCS.

Coordinate with OUSF Faculty Director and Associate Director for NCS the annual cycle of selecting, endorsing, and advising students applying for NCS.

Attend OUE program leaders meetings and represent OUSF in other administrative meetings as needed. Direct communications efforts to ensure that OUSF, its mission, events, and achievements are appropriately communicated to various stakeholders.

Develop and maintain relationships with the Duke Office of University Development, the Duke Alumni Association, the Office of News and Communication public, and other re Levant offices to communicate with merit scholarship providers and coordinate dissemination of relevant information.

Prepare annual reports and grant proposals for donors and foundations supporting OUSF programs.

Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify, and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds in conjunction with the Finance and Administration Hub in the Office of Undergraduate Education.

Direct various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, and transfers.

Oversee the development of robust evaluation and assessment program for OUSF.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

A Master degree and previous supervisory experience managing a student- focused center or similar facility are required. A PhD or other advanced degree is preferred as well as experience in higher education. Background in advising high-achieving students, major national and international student fellowships and/or research experience with undergraduates is preferred.

 

Experience:

Candidate must have 4-5 years experience managing a student-focused center or similar facility and demonstrate success in staff recruitment, development and retention. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

 

Skills:

Experience in budget development and management, staff management, and promotion of the office are also expected. Candidates must possess advanced oral, written and cross cultural communication skills and an ability to negotiate and resolve multiple complex problems in a timely manner. Exemplary planning and organizational skills are required.
