Occupational Summary

Assist the Senior Vice President for Public Affairs in the development and implementation of a sound public affairs strategy for Duke University, with particular focus on providing communication support for the President, Trustees and Officers. Assist the Senior Vice President in devising and executing programs, policies and activities to educate and inform audiences, both internal and external, about the role, mission and accomplishments of Duke University and, as appropriate, of higher education in general.

Work Performed

Communicate to both internal and external audiences about topics of institutional importance as identified by University administrative leaders, including preparing materials on major issues in higher education dealing with the institution's budget, policies and procedures, student admissions and the policies and practices affecting admissions, the University's relationship to government at all levels, and any other issues unique to Duke University.

In the absence of the Senior Vice President, represent the Office of Public Affairs in senior administrative bodies; serve as a member of the Senior Vice President for Public Affairs' cabinet.

Undertake research and other projects, using independent judgment, to enable Duke to develop strategies and programs to enhance Duke University's image with the public. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English or related discipline.

 

Experience:

Requires at least 7 years experience in a complex academic institutions or similar organizations.
