Occupational Summary

Reporting to the Vice President for Facilities, the Executive Director for Building and Landscape Services directs and oversees the maintenance and operations of all University facilities, and provides customer service center response to all functions for Facilities Management Department (FMD) at Duke University.

Work Performed

Provides integrated Facility Operations services supporting the University campus including 6.1 million square feet of classrooms, research laboratories, vivariums, athletic centers, performing arts auditoriums, lecture halls, administration offices, Duke Chapel, housing, auxiliary buildings and parking decks.

Direct the responsible investment of the Facility Operations Expense Budget to maintain and operate the universitys valuable facility assets to ensure full and beneficial operations.

Assemble the appropriate set up multidisciplinary professionals which integrates support of people, process and technology to ensure the safe, secure and sustainable functionality of the built environment.

Oversee awareness of advancing critical systems technology, innovations, in energy efficiency, sustainable design and business practices which impact student and employee productivity, campus efficiency, and external perceptions of the University.

Develop a high performing operations team that sets and achieves service quality performance goals, objectives and policies in support of the FMD and University.

Build a strong working relationship with collective bargaining unit Local 465 leadership and staff to ensure no interruption of service.

In conjunction with HR, participate in negotiations, grievance resolution and jurisdictional interpretations.

Oversee development and implementation of a Facility Operations Safety Program that ensures work hazards are identified, appropriate safety procedures are written, and staff are knowledgeable and comply with all program requirements.

Develop and maintain integrated services with Duke Utility and Engineering services to ensure uninterrupted service to occupants and functions across the campus.

In conjunction with DUES, establish and implement an effective program to proactively operate and maintain the high performance buildings and critical systems.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, construction management.

 

Experience:

Work requires a minimum of 10 years related experience in facilities management, engineering, or architecture with an increasing level of responsibility. Demonstrated leadership experience in a large, complex organization. Strong customer service philosophy and ability to motivate staff in a changing environment.

Knowledge of building systems, work order processes, safety regulations and requirements, building codes, capital projects, budgets, and personnel management is required.
