Occupational Summary

The Assistant Vice President, Principal & Leadership Gifts will focus on managing the president's and vice president's portfolios of current and prospective donors, building strategies for presidential development activity for the years ahead, and managing that collaborative process. Will work closely with the Associate VP for principal gifts to develop strategies for presidential prospective donors and work to ensure the execution of those strategies.

Work Performed

Strategically drive presidential development activity working well in advance so that semi-annual schedules are constructed and well executed, effectively asking for and using the president's time available for development efforts.

Manage the planning and implementation of development trips for the president including identifying prospects to see, collaborating with gift officers around strategies for these prospects, contacting donors and prospects, preparing and overseeing presidential briefings and related materials outlining the strategy, and working with principal gifts staff to prepare details for the trip.

Work with the president's executive assistant to coordinate his available time with development requests. A well-prepared plan will ensure we gain as much of the president's time as we need.

Oversee and advise colleagues charged with writing briefings for the president, provost, and other key leaders involved with principal gifts solicitation.

Work with the development communications team to provide information essential to the creation of principal gift proposals that are compelling and clear to donors.

Working with principal gifts staff, make sure that information is available across campus about presidential development activity and opportunities for the president to work with prospective donors.

Work with the principal gifts team to ensure that all feedback from the president's development work is recorded in the database for future use.

Manage the process and preparation for an annual development meeting with the president, provost and vice president.

Working with the associate VP of Principal Gifts, manage the vice president's development work by:

Monitoring and tracking portfolio

Overseeing work with major gift officers

Managing the briefing process for meetings whether alone or with other gift officers

Ensuring all feedback from the vice president's development work is recorded in the database for future use

Develop programs / gift opportunities that link top donor interest to university needs & priorities.

Collaborate with associate VP of Principal Gifts, university senior leadership, academic leadership, school and unit leadership for the purpose of developing new giving opportunities that will advance the university and enhance the student experience.

Support the process to articulate these visions for the university's top donors.

Support the development of proposals for top level giving opportunities.

Organize and facilitate strategy meetings on multi-interest prospects with colleagues across campus to keep activity and strategies moving forward. Plan and staff associate vice president and vice president in meetings concerning strategies for top prospects to the university.

Assist with the development of any relevant boards or advisory groups that result from these initiatives.

Prospect Identification, Management, and Strategies - Timing of Solicitation Process.

Work across the university as a strategic partner with front-line fundraisers to identify current and prospective donors who will need presidential and/or vice-presidential attention in the year ahead for cultivation, solicitation or stewardship efforts in support of the university's highest priorities. This preparatory work requires active outreach to and collaboration with associate deans, gift officers and directors within the colleges, the professional and graduate schools, units, and the Alumni Engagement & Development office to 'build the pipeline.'

Identify the president's Top 50-100 prospective donors for any given year through collaboration with colleagues and use of data tools put into place to capture pipeline information. Monitor progress with those prospects, making sure there are viable strategies identified, next steps executed and progress made.

Set goals, with vice president and associate vice president, for presidential development activity.

With the vice president and associate vice president, manage the activity around the "One Duke" prospect pool, regularly communicating with the entire Duke development community around the One Duke definition and protocols for engaging with those donors.

Working with principal gifts assistant director, make sure activity of presidential contacts is maintained in the database.

Develop personalized stewardship plans for principal gift donors working with the principal gifts stewardship specialist and with the director of donor relations.

Lead efforts to prepare the principal gifts operating plan as it relates to prospect management.

Manage pledge reminders supervision for $1M+ lifetime donors

Assist with oversight of next generation philanthropists for children of $1M+ rated parent

Collaborate with Duke Health for identification of potential grateful patients

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Bachelor's degree required.

 

Experience:

Demonstrated successful experience and effectiveness in major gift fundraising and/or university leadership/administrator for a minimum of five years.

Experience managing boards and/or volunteers preferred.
