Occupational Summary

Duke Chapel is a significant Christian institution but it is also called to promote the spiritual flourishing of all faith traditions on campus. It carries out the latter role by convening and supporting the campus ministries and by sponsoring the Faith Council. These ministries are the primary responsibility of the Associate Dean for Religious Life, who also has a role in the pastoral care of students, in the worshipping life of the Chapel, and in administrative leadership.

Work Performed

Faith Council

Lead the work of the FC in partnership with the Dean, FC chair and FC members. Represent the FC on campus, in Durham, in the Triangle and nationally, building up a network of partners for dissemination, education and discussion of best practice.

Organize regular interfaith events on campus, around six per year.

Convene monthly FC meetings and monthly standing committee meetings, provide food, set agendas, and take minutes.

Ensure significant student attendance at events and participation in programs in partnership with appropriate groups.

Establish a transferable model of interfaith work that has applicability in other contexts and in other circumstances of difference beyond interfaith difference.

Seek to establish an interfaith DukeEngage program.

Religious Life

Convene bi-weekly staff meetings and semester retreats.

Manage endowments that are intended for Religious Life, particularly in relation to mission trips.

Offer guidance and advocacy for the work of the Religious Life staff.

Coordinate joint religious and spiritual programming for the community.

Coordinate interfaith vigils in response to crisis events.

Participate in the Campus Life Directors' Council convened by the Asst. VP for Student Affairs. Orient new staff.

Build community among Religious Life staff.

Help facilitate student interaction across faith traditions by bringing student leaders of Religious Life groups together on a regular basis.

Network closely with other branches of the university to help Religious Life groups be more integrated into campus life and better informed about campus issues.

Invest in the Religious Life groups themselves by interacting with students and understanding the resources they have to share.

Actively promote the ministries of the individual Religious Life groups at every opportunity.

Student Ministry

Convene and chair Student Ministry Roundtable for Chapel ministry staff. Participate in Chapel's program of curricular teaching, as TA or lecturer as appropriate, up to one course per year.

Lead a vocational discernment group.

Meet with students individually as appropriate, especially in times of urgent need.

Liturgical Ministry

Lead worship at Duke Chapel on Sundays and weekdays to a degree appropriate to experience, aptitude, tradition and standing in the community.

Preach as appropriate.

Administrative Leadership

Participate in the Chapel's senior staff meetings.

Supervise appropriate staff and programs.

Deputize for the Dean at moments when administrative leadership is required and the Dean is unavailable, and represent the Dean at university and community events as required.

Interact with senior university administrators as appropriate.

Perform such other reasonable duties as the Dean shall deem appropriate.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Master's Degree required, with a strong preference for Master of Divinity or related field. Ph.D. or D.Min. preferred.

 

Experience:

Five years comparable experience required. Interfaith experience required. Experience in academic setting strongly preferred.
