Occupational Summary

The Assistant Dean will assist in developing an undergraduate residential experience characterized by community development, faculty interaction, and leadership opportunities. Oversee initiatives such as residential leadership programs, class programs, faculty engagement, Duke Houses programs, or training. Recruit, train, supervise and manage performance of assigned staff.

Work Performed

Provide direction and leadership of initiatives such as residential leadership programs, Duke Houses programs, class programs, faculty engagement, or training. Participate in staff selection and training.

Supervise assigned staff.

Assess the job performance of direct reports and manage the job performance appraisal process.

Manage assigned budgets according to departmental and University policies and procedures.

Develop and sustain living environments that celebrate learning as an integral focus of the residential and university experience.

Forge partnerships within academic and student affairs to ensure delivery of a residential experience characterized by faculty engagement.

Collaborate with university colleagues to provide support to students in crisis, and facilitate effective responses to student behavioral issues, as circumstances require.

Serve on the University Emergency Dean-On-Call rotation responding to both undergraduate and graduate student emergencies.

Contribute to overall leadership of HRL by serving on leadership team as well as representing office in various divisional and university forums.

Assist with related projects, including but not limited to marketing initiatives, policy development, assessment efforts, manual resources, programming initiatives, and the like.

Perform related duties as assigned or required to meet departmental, division-wide and University goals and objectives.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Master's degree in higher education, student personnel or a related field required.

 

Experience:

Three years of full-time experience working in university residential communities. Experience supervising staff at multiple levels, developing initiatives to foster community and learning, and administering budgets required.
