Occupational Summary

Provide specialized patient care functions as a clinician, educator and/or a consultant for a specified patient population.

Work Performed

Coordinate with the nursing staff to identify patient care problems, to implement approaches to these problems and to evaluate the effectiveness of the approaches.

Perform clinical evaluations and make clinical judgments based on a synthesis of concepts, principles, models and theories to solve complex problems.

Serve as a consultant in a nursing specialty area for patients, nurses and other health team members throughout Duke University Medical Center and community agencies.

Participate in departmental and hospital committees and meetings to facilitate improvement of patient care and development of goals, philosophies and objectives for a specialized patient population. Maintain liaison with faculty members of schools of nursing to arrange and facilitate clinical experience for nursing students; communicate with faculty members concerning students' needs and progress.

Coordinate the development and implementation of an educational program designed to convey specialized knowledge and skills to nursing personnel.

Coordinate plans for the professional development of the nursing staff assigned to a specialty unit area and serve as a practitioner of specialized patient care.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires completion of a Master's degree in Nursing. State of North Carolina licensure is also required.

 

Experience:

Work requires one year of nursing experience beyond the Master's degree.
