Occupational Summary

Position provides direction and leadership for a large athletic department within Duke Athletics.

Work Performed

With general guidance from senior leadership, lead the strategic planning for assigned departments or units.

Develop and implement short and long term plans consistent with the overall strategic planning of the Athletics Department.

Conduct periodic program assessments and analyze the efficiency of the department or unit to make recommendations for improvements.

Coordinate operational and special events activities.

Manage the administrative staff, and assist in the development of the operating budget.

Work with the Deputy Athletics Director and Assistant Athletic Director for Human Resources to facilitate personnel actions and to resolve personnel problems and issues; assist with the implementation of policies and procedures for recruitment, screening, interviewing and hiring of applicants, and performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules.

Advise the Director of Athletics on status of current activities, prepare appropriate recommendations for solutions to problems, and coordinate the establishment and implementation of administrative policies and procedures, internally and externally.

Identify and manage issues impacting Duke Athletics reputation, image, and public relations.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred.

 

Experience:

Requires the ability to manage operational and administrative activities related to the athletics industry, generally acquired through three years of experience in athletics operations, running an athletics department, and/or operations management at a high corporate level.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

 

Skills:

Excellent communications skills, ability to multitask, work with differing populations of employees.
