Manage and coordinate the activities of the instrument shop to provide machining, design, construction, installation, repair and maintenance of precision parts and scientific equipment.
Manage and coordinate the work of instrument shop personnel in machining of precision parts and the design, construction, installation, repair and maintenance of complex scientific equipment to include the requisition of materials, billing, division of labor, bookkeeping and maintenance. Schedule and assign work to ensure efficient utilization of manpower, equipment and facilities.
Advise faculty, students and other customers regarding construction and modification of equipment; review blueprints, sketches, photographs and other specifications and estimate total job cost.
Inspect completed work for accuracy and compliance with pertinent safety regulations. Prepare budget recommendations; maintain accurate records and prepare comprehensive reports reflecting work activities and financial status.
Manage the operations of an equipment shop for the personal use of students and faculty.
Perform various personnel functions including, but not limited to hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Education/Training: | Work requires a general background in machine shop equipment operation, and metal or plastic work generally acquired through a technical or vocational high school education. |
Experience: | Work requires ten years instrument making experience or related experience such as machinist or tool and die maker to acquire proficiency in fabricating precision parts, instruments and equipment to support scientific research and medical diagnoses. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE. |
