Provide institutional leadership in the coordination and administration of organizational risk strategy, risk transfer mechanisms, and insurance-related programs. Ensure continuity in the institution's risk posture and operational protections through efficient claims handling and risk advisory support.
Lead the development and implementation of institutional risk financing and insurance strategies, including program design, broker relationships, and annual renewals. Oversee the administration of the organization's insurance portfolio, including property, casualty, and specialty lines, ensuring alignment with risk tolerance and cost- efficiency objectives.
Provide strategic direction and oversight for claims management activities performed by the designated Claims Manager, including monitoring of general liability and auto claims within retention limits. Serve as the primary institutional liaison to external insurance partners, actuaries, legal counsel, and third-party administrators on complex or escalated matters. Advise departments and leadership on risk- related language in contracts, insurance requirements, indemnity provisions, and incident response protocols. Review and analyze claims trends and loss data to support risk mitigation planning and insurance program adjustments.
Coordinate risk mitigation programs/processes, risk-related communications and training initiatives in collaboration with internal stakeholders, focusing on awareness and accountability. Develop and manage departmental budgets associated with insurance premiums, deductibles, claims reserves, and risk consulting.
Supervise assigned staff, providing guidance on risk policy, workflow efficiency, and professional development.
Represent the risk function in institutional committees and working groups, ensuring integration of risk considerations into operational planning. Oversee various personnel functions, including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions and vacation schedules.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
| Education/Training: | Work requires excellent oral and written communication skills and analytical skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program. CPCU or ARM certification is highly desirable. |
| Experience: | Work requires a minimum of 10 years of progressive risk management experience in higher education, or practical risk management experience in another industry in an organization with large and diverse risk profiles or equivalent insurance company or insurance broker experience. 3-5 years supervisory experience is desirable. Ability to work independently and handle competing demands while navigating a complex organization with a diverse population and decentralized culture. |
