Occupational Summary

The Nurse Clinician is responsible and accountable for clinical expertise for specific patient populations. The incumbent functions as a clinician, educator, investigator, consultant, and leader. Clinical judgments are based on a synthesis of current research, concepts, principles, theories, and outcomes to solve complex problems. The Nurse Clinician functions as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team, contributing to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and in providing leadership to the organization.

Work Performed

Provide specialized nursing treatment, care, and education to patients in accordance with physician/nursing orders and established policies and procedures.

Serve as resource for all patient care and address patient concerns.

Utilize current nursing and clinical research to support evidence-based clinical decision making and practice.

Utilize teaching and learning theories to assist patients and families with physical and emotional impact of body changes and chronic illness.

Coordinate the development, utilization, and evaluation of appropriate educational resources and interventions that assist the patient/caregiver in developing the skills for self-care.

Promote evidence based practice through staff education and participation in developing, implementing, and evaluating process standards such as plans of care, protocols, and guidelines. As an APS member, collaborates in preparing standardized orders (CPOE) and protocol driven practice updates and reviews.

Assess the educational needs of the patient/caregiver as they relate to the disease process and alterations in function.

Participate in quality/performance improvement programs and projects, product evaluation, outcomes evaluation studies, and/or clinical research.

Serve as a practitioner of specialized patient care. Serve as a resource person in a nursing specialty area for patients, nurses, and other health team members throughout Duke University Medical Center and community agencies.

Participate in the Quality Assurance Program in Nursing for the development, implementation and evaluation of patient care.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

BSN required

 

Experience:

3 years of nursing experience required. Current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina required. BLS required.
