Occupational Summary

Direct the production and contents of Duke Today, The Duke Daily and The Duke Weekly.

Work Performed

Develop and implement comprehensive and strategic editorial programming for Duke Today, The Duke Daily and The Duke Weekly.

Manage the voice, production, oversight, and planning of content for the site and related pages. Align content plan with university wide initiatives and ensure the site contents and layout consistently represent the current priorities of the university and the standards of production (including style, layout, and user experience) reflect those of our office and the Duke brand.

Track effectiveness of efforts through metrics, independently and in coordination with other teams within PAGR.

Lead editorial planning meetings that result in story shaping at the outset of idea generation. Provide editorial guidance and oversight that ensures stories deliver brand journalism in support of Duke and digitally native journalism from all story producers.

Research, write, and produce (or assign to others) stories in written, multimedia, and other formats that document campus life and effectively convey the university's priority scholarly, research and patient care missions.

Manage the emergency alert notification elements of Duke Today, including the Alert Bar. Participate in drills and ensure notifications are posted in a timely way during weather, crisis, and event situations.

Coordinate content production involving members the Public Affairs and Government Relations teams.

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with Duke's senior leaders, the office of Communications Services, and school/unit communication offices and colleagues. Coordinate with other units to disseminate communications to staff, faculty, students and other members of the Duke community as appropriate.

Serve as a consultant for communication opportunities; collaborate with communicators, graphic designers, photographers, and freelancers as needed. Conduct interviews, research, develop, and edit news stories, feature articles and presentations that publicize and promote Duke activities and programs.

Supervise assigned staff.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described therein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Completion of a Bachelor's degree program in Journalism, Communications, English or a related discipline.

 

Experience:

Requires at least 8 years of experience in writing, public relations, communications or related discipline.
