This position plays a lead role in managing and operating the Duke Forest as a teaching and research facility, a responsibly managed working forest, a conservation asset, an environmental education resource, and a recreational amenity. It provides direct supervisory responsibility over the technician role and students working in the field, as well as direct oversight of the Duke Forest maintenance shop, equipment fleet, and rental houses. This position works closely with the Director to lead implementation of forest management activities that accomplish the Duke Forest mission and management objectives and advance the strategic plan. It also works closely with (and sometimes without) the Director to provide important capacity for forestry and natural resource education at Duke, both in classes and through the guidance of student projects.
Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of forest management activities related but not limited to: all aspects of timber management (site prep, intermediate treatments, final harvests); forest inventory and cover typing; fire control and prescribed burning; boundary line maintenance; invasive species management; hazard tree assessment and removal; storm and/or pest damage response; and conservation and restoration projects; ensure compliance of forest management activities with Forest Stewardship Council guidelines.
Oversee the organization, operation, and management of the maintenance shop and other facilities; the operation, maintenance, and repair of the equipment and vehicle fleets; and the repair and maintenance of rental houses.
Supervise the technician position and oversee the successful completion of key technical roles, including but not limited to: equipment operation, repair, and maintenance; vehicle repair and maintenance; road/trail building, repair, and maintenance; research site establishment and maintenance; rental house maintenance; picnic shelter maintenance; and basic carpentry and welding activities.
Provide primary response to severe weather and rental house emergencies or designate appropriate staff to respond.
Lead/co-lead Forest's participation in forestry related classes at Nicholas School of the Environment.
Advise the Duke Forest Director regarding the fiscal requirements for Duke Forest operations and projected revenues through activities such as timber sales.
Advise the Duke Forest Director in responding to emerging internal, university, or external issues, as needed; lead response implementation, as needed.
Supervise management and summer interns, as well as student assistants, on various projects in the forest.
Represent the Forest to a diverse suite of stakeholders including: the teaching and research community; university and K-12 students; local citizenry; and Duke University administration.
Support completion of all necessary record keeping documentation, including the creation, modification, and maintenance of the Forest's Geographic Information System database.
Support planning, management, and execution of activities that meet teaching and research needs.
Support implementation of the strategic plan.
Support education and outreach activities for labs, classes, alumni groups, and the general public.
Support projects or annual events such as the Deer Management Program, the Annual Gathering, and the Pine Cone Pacer 5K fundraising run.
Education/Training: | Required: Bachelor's degree in forestry or natural resources management, or an equivalent combination of applicable education and experience Current Class A Commercial Driver's License NC Registered Forester or should meet the requirements within 6 months of hire NC Certified Burn Boss or should meet the requirements within 1 year of hire NC Pesticide Applicator License or should meet the requirements within 1 year of hire |
Experience: | A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience; Prefer familiarity with forest management certification. |
