Occupational Summary

The Executive Director of Development for the Duke Cancer Institute, provides strategic direction and is responsible for planning, management and execution of fundraising activities in support of the Duke Cancer Institute, including developing new strength in leadership and principal gifts, expanding the major gifts program, effective development communications, significant growth in annual fund programs and creative social media and community engagement programs; as well as volunteer motivation and management.

Work Performed

The Executive Director, The Duke Cancer Institute is a member of the Duke Medicine Development & Alumni Affairs senior management team (the Direct Reports) and works closely with other members to help determine and implement the overall goals and objectives of Duke Medicine.

Oversee and manage all development activities of The Duke Cancer Institute.

In consultation with the Executive Director, DCI, prioritize the funding opportunities of DCI initiatives; develop immediate, short term and long range plans for support required to implement DCI programs including faculty recruitment, construction, renovation, equipping, and staffing of facilities.

Design, implement and oversee fundraising strategic plans as well as annual operating plans for support of The Duke Cancer Institute, that orient the development program toward maximizing principal, leadership & major gifts and enhancing traditional and new programs to encourage annual, unrestricted gifts.

Oversee organizational design and development to achieve program objectives.

Design and implement ongoing programs which identify, cultivate, and result in solicitation of major gifts in support of the above mentioned program and in a campaign environment.

Partner strategically with Duke Medicine and Duke University colleagues to identify and engage prospects with an interest in cancer from the broader Duke community.

Serve as a member of the Duke Medicine Development senior management team; actively participate in long range planning, budgeting and campaign planning.

Manage a portfolio of significant prospects and donors to the Duke Cancer Institute.

Work collaboratively with the AVP, Leadership and Principal Gifts (a member of the Duke Medicine Development Executive Leadership Team) to devise comprehensive, logical strategies for these prospects. Guide and participate in the recruitment of volunteer leaders and staff to The Duke Cancer Institute Board of Overseers, Citizens Advisory Council, and new Executive Directors committee on philanthropy, in support of leadership, principal and major gift efforts.

Design and implement a faculty engagement program to encourage fundraising from grateful patients and other potential prospects.

Provide development support for the Executive Director of the DCI and other senior academic leaders interested in patient care, research, education, and advocacy in the area of health.

Provide ongoing stewardship of donors through special events, receptions, luncheons, dinners, letters, calls and visits.

Supervise a professional and support staff, including directing personnel actions such as hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules, among others.

In consultation with Duke Medicine Development, determine fiscal and personnel requirements for The Cancer Institute Development and prepare budgetary recommendations.

Develop comprehensive development communications plan, maintaining strong relationships with Duke Medicine development communications & DUHS marketing communications.

Prepare reports and analyses of the progress, trends and direction of various DCI initiatives with appropriate recommendations & conclusions.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree program.

 

Experience:

Work requires a minimum of eight years experience in alumni affairs, public relations, fund raising, marketing, strategic planning, research, institutional management or a related field to acquire skills necessary to provide leadership for efforts related to strategic planning, information systems planning, and special projects.
