Occupational Summary

Equal Opportunity/Compliance Investigators provide support to the University in creating a safe and respectful educational and employment environment by addressing instances of discrimination, harassment and sexual misconduct through investigation, informal problem solving and education. The Investigators will be expected to work independently but report to the Assistant Vice President for Harassment Prevention and Complaint Handling and the Assistant Vice President/Title IX Coordinator. The Investigators primary responsibility will be to participate in overseeing the University's compliance with laws, rules, and University policies and procedures on discrimination and harassment in education and employment.

Work Performed

Conduct independent, thorough and impartial investigations of reports of violations of Dukes (Policy against Prohibited Discrimination, Harassment and Related Misconduct, and the Student Sexual Misconduct Policy) through development of an investigative plan to include interviews of complainants, respondents, witnesses, and others, and identification and collection of other available and relevant data.

Perform informal resolution practices to address complaints, concerns or allegations.

Strategically and sensitively ask appropriate questions during interviews using trauma informed methodology to gather information about alleged incidents of discrimination or harassment.

Conduct periodic travel to off site university programs to respond to reports.

Prepare comprehensive written report of information obtained during an investigation.

Review investigation and report with identified University staff and respond as necessary to complete investigation.

Provide testimony to, and answer questions from, hearing panelists about investigation.

Assist in maintaining database related to reports of discrimination and harassment and develop reports, assess trends, and identify areas of concern in the campus environment and beyond.

Provide employment discrimination and harassment, and Title IX related training and outreach to members of the University community.

Support and consult with appropriate University administrators, managers or supervisors in furtherance of ensuring compliance with laws, rules, and University policies and procedures on discrimination and harassment in education and employment.

Assist with the review of policies and procedures related to discrimination and harassment to ensure compliance with the law and alignment with best practices.

Participate in ongoing training on employment discrimination and harassment, Title IX, and other federal laws and regulations, investigative techniques (including trauma informed interviewing), diversity and the intersections of identity.

Monitor developments in law, policy, and practice related to employment discrimination and harassment, Title IX, and sexual misconduct.

Conduct research on questions relevant to the analysis required in the course of investigations.

Complete other projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Bachelor's degree required; Juris doctor or advanced degree in public health, human services, employee relations, social work, psychology, education, or a related field preferred.

 

Experience:

Three years of experience investigating and resolving discrimination complaints, including complaints alleging sexual violence or sexual misconduct, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience in the higher education environment a plus.
