Occupational Summary

The Vice Provost for Learning Initiatives and Digital Education (VPLI- DE) has primary responsibility for setting Duke's digital education strategies, in collaboration with the Provost, school leadership, faculty leaders, and Duke administration. They are broadly responsible for supporting Duke faculty and instructors, schools, university institutes and centers, and continuing studies in advancing Duke educational experiences for undergraduate, graduate, professional, K-12, alumni and other lifelong learners through the application of innovative teaching methods and supporting technologies. On an operational level, the VPLTI delivers internal support and services via two direct reporting units Duke Learning Innovation and Duke Continuing Studies and in conjunction with its strategic partner, Duke's Office of Information Technology (OIT).

Work Performed

At the highest level, the VPLI-DE provides vision and leadership in setting Duke's overall agenda for innovations in classroom and online education, including those that employ digital technologies significantly or those that use them peripherally. They also lead strategic planning for technology-enhanced education initiatives at Duke, in close collaboration with the university Chief Information Officer.

Duke Learning Innovation provides internal support and services to the Duke community, including but not limited to: pedagogical development, online learning development of classes and programs, learning technologies, research-evaluation-development of teaching approaches, evaluating teaching technologies, and organizing learning networks and communities.

Duke Continuing Studies provides educational programming to a variety of external audiences including K-12 learners, practicing professionals, alumni, and other lifelong learners. The VPLTI is responsible for ensuring that Continuing Studies advances Duke's reputation, mission and strategic priorities including its commitment to life-long learning.

Collaboration with school and university-institute-center (UIC) leadership to support, develop and market online degree and non-degree programs, certificates and courses, and to promote the effective repurposing of materials across audiences and systems. This work includes helping school leadership to develop strategic and operating plans that ensure alignment with Duke's academic mission and the marketability and success of the programs including the most efficient development of reusable content practical.

Serves as a convener and liaison across communities and stakeholders within Duke and across higher education and technology-related sectors; formulates goals, initiates programs, and develops policies to advance Duke's vision for innovations in face-to-face and online education, in collaboration with deans, faculty and committees.

Provides leadership to stakeholders throughout Duke for the centrality of pedagogy as the motivating force in pursuing teaching and learning innovations; identifies where, how and when to utilize and support technology to advance that objective, with an eye toward industry trends and in conjunction with Duke OIT. Advocates that programs focus attention on learning outcomes and measures of success.

Serves as primary liaison with business partners related to digital education activities; leads the evaluation and adoption of new programmatic approaches and coordinates the development and delivery of Duke-hosted content, including individual courses and various multi- course program specializations.

Represents Duke's digital education initiatives to groups internal and external to Duke, such as the Board of Trustees, and representatives from other universities, businesses and foundations; serves as a visible participant in professional networks and actively engages nationally as a leader in innovative approaches to digital education.

Collaborates and coordinates with the Chief Information Officer and Duke OIT to build/improve/scale as well as maintain and oversee the technology infrastructure to support to not only support traditional students but to allow greater flexibility to serve the needs of non- credit, non-traditional learners.

Responsible for the team that supports Duke faculty and instructors in advancing pedagogy, creating active learning programming, and promote inclusive and collaborative learning. Activities include but are not limited to:

Partnering with instructors to support student-centered, active learning for more equitable, accessible and inclusive experiences that help all learners achieve learning outcomes.

Building Duke's ecosystem of education technology tools and working with faculty and staff to use them effectively.

Supporting online education that expands access, offers flexibility and provides meaningful learning opportunities at Duke and globally.

Advancing education innovation, by supporting, conducting and disseminating teaching and learning research and by evaluating education technology tools.

Strengthening connections among people who are passionate about learning, sharing ideas and contributing to education innovation.

Develops and promotes innovative programming involving new combinations of learning, including virtual, in-person and hybrid modalities; works collaboratively across campus to identify, design and/or develop new content and learning experiences in alignment with best practices and market trends that can be delivered in a variety of ways (short modules, certificates, pathways to degrees) and a variety of audiences (current students, pre-college, alums).

Continuing Studies includes: pre-college learners (virtual, in-person and hybrid classes offered to K-12 students), professional certifications (certificates and continuing professional education classes targeted to working professionals); non-profit management (certificates and individual classes offered to the non-for-profit sector); OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, short courses offered to adults); commitment to alumni lifelong learning.

Provides functional and financial oversight over Continuing Studies, including its administration, infrastructure, programming, support of internal constituents, and advancement of relationships with alumni, current students, and external audiences.

Oversee the development and execution of all marketing activities, including those delivered via web site, registration system, and CRM system; coordinate the implementation and operation of those systems together with Duke OIT.

Support and grow the use of data and learning analytics to inform decisions about the creation, modification or elimination of courses and programs. Promote a culture of continuous improvement and measurement of impact.

Work with internal and external audiences to develop and execute a non- credit programming portfolio, including but not limited to, lifelong learning for alumni and senior adults, professional certificate programs for individuals seeking career change and/or enhancement, nonprofit management and leadership, and pre-college and gifted youth programs.

Coordinate all pre-college (K-12) programs on the Duke campus including those offered by Continuing Studies and those offered by other parts of the University; work closely with Human Resources and legal counsel to ensure compliance with regulations, policies, and procedures related to minors.

Collaborate with Duke's schools to support and/or deliver programmatic activities outside of the normal semester experiences, including non- degree education and online certificates and degrees offered by the schools and UICs, and executive education opportunities. Partners with Duke OIT and other University centers (e.g., Center for Computational Thinking) to further market and promote the use of the co-curricular and other online materials produced through those units.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred: Ph.D. or other terminal degree.

 

Experience:
