Occupational Summary

Manage the computing facilities, local area networks and electronics shop for the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) to include installation of special data acquisition hardware and software, training network users, consultation on special data acquisition software, and assisting the Director in development of specifications of data acquisitions and analysis of computer systems and with design and supervision of construction and final testing of special data acquisition electronics.

Work Performed

Consult with faculty and students on detailed operations of laboratory data acquisition systems on specialized computers, advising on interfacing of hardware and instructing on use of acquisition computers; recommend applicability of data acquisition computers for new experiment initiatives; recommend new equipment and techniques for data acquisition.

Serve as network and computer system administrator; assist users to include answering questions, resolving problems and informing them of current and upcoming changes in network and computer facilities.

Schedule and maintain operations of computer facilities to include preventive maintenance, records of repairs, hardware and software maintenance and license agreements.

Assist Director with long range planning to include establishing goals for hardware development to serve needs of laboratory research programs and planning for future expansion of laboratory computers; keep abreast of changing technology and assess capabilities for utilization within the laboratory.

Maintain liaison with visiting researchers and coordinate their data acquisition requirements.

Assist faculty and research personnel in preparing proposals for new electronic, data acquisition hardware and computing equipment.

Assist with design and supervise construction of special purpose electronic equipment, control electronics, RF system for Polarized Ion Source, and special interface modules for laboratory data acquisition computers.

Recommend various personnel actions including hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires a Bachelors degree in electrical engineering, mathematics, computer science or a computer related field, or equivalent coursework or technical training.

 

Experience:

Work requires two years progressive experience with computer programming, nuclear and high energy experimental electronics, data acquisition computer system and/or operating systems.
