Occupational Summary

The Senior Director of Community Development will lead Duke University's efforts to foster strong, sustainable relationships with its neighbors and build upon its robust affordable housing work. For over twenty years, Duke has fostered and cultivated a strong working relationship with fourteen neighborhoods surrounding campus-seeking to support those neighborhoods' self-determined needs through various university resources and community connections. The selected leader must have a keen understanding of this history and of place-based initiatives. Building off this work, they will demonstrate the ability to consider current and future trends and needs as Durham and its neighborhoods evolve and change. The Senior Director will be a capable communicator and listener with strong ties throughout Durham and its various neighborhoods and communities. Capitalizing on Duke's role as an anchor institution, the selected candidate will be an effective champion and partner in spurring more affordable housing throughout Durham. In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Housing, they will shepherd the Affordable Housing Council as well as the Duke Homebuyers Club to promote the multi-faceted ways Duke can support both its employees and the broader community's goal of access to quality housing. This role will manage the Assistant Director of Housing and the Senior Program Coordinator of the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership and Community Development.

Work Performed

Strategic Communication: Listen closely to neighborhood needs and priorities. Serve as an effective communicator about those priorities to Duke leadership and communicate on behalf of Duke to community leaders. Possess strong writing skills, able to succinctly translate thoughts and complex activities in written form.

Partnership Building: Establish and maintain partnerships with local government, non-profits, community organizations, regional universities and community colleges, and other stakeholders to advance housing and neighborhood projects.

Strategic Planning: Develop and implement strategies to address housing and neighborhood engagement priorities, aligning with Duke Community Affairs??? Strategic Community Impact Plan.

Program Development: In collaboration with the Senior Coordinator of DDNP, design and oversee programs that support neighborhood priorities and goals, and community engagement initiatives.

Community Outreach: Lead outreach efforts to engage residents, gather feedback, and ensure community needs are met through Duke's initiatives.

Collaboration: In partnership with the Senior Director of Economic Inclusion, identify ways for neighborhood businesses to work with Duke as vendors or contractors and support neighborhood residents seeking employment at Duke and Duke Health.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires a Bachelors degree; Masters degree preferred.

 

Experience:

Work requires 8 years of work experience in housing, city planning, and community development or other related fields.
