Occupational Summary

Reporting to the Director of Corporate Relations, the Associate Director will be a vital partner in the successful implementation of Dukes corporate relations strategy. As an experienced facilitator of university/business partnerships, he/she will work closely with the Universitys senior administration, faculty, and staff in initiating, supporting and strengthening key alliances that provide significant value (in the form of scholarly engagement, research, internships/careers, speakers and board-service, executive-education, donations, etc.) to university programs. The Associate Director supports university-wide initiatives, assists the corporate relations efforts of Dukes schools, staffs a campus-level Financial Industry Team and facilitates the development of strategies for broad corporate partnerships. Corporate Relations (CR) is part of the central Office of University Development, but also reports to an Executive Committee consisting of the Provost (Chair), Executive Vice President, Vice Chancellor of Corporate and Venture Development, and the Vice President of Alumni Affairs and Development. CR provides services to the broader university community and particularly Trinity College of Arts and Sciences. In addition, CR coordinates efforts across, and works closely with the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University Medical, the Pratt School of Engineering, and the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences, as well as several interdisciplinary institutes and programs which have their own corporate relations functions.

Work Performed

Internal Coordination and Preparation:

Actively assist in implementing Dukes corporate relations strategy.

Provide primary staff support to the Financial Industry Team and facilitate campus wide strategy development and implementation to maximize the value of partnerships with the financial sector.

Work with central and school administrations and staff to develop and articulate appropriate program concepts, strategies for partnership, and proposals.

Initiate and manage regular meetings with school staff with corporate responsibilities to review progress toward partnership goals.

Review and edit proposals developed by faculty and other staff.

Serve as the liaison with certain professional schools regarding corporate relations.

Working with External Partners:

Initiate and cultivate corporate partnerships in consultation and coordination with the Director and Executive Committee.

Interact with and enlist key volunteers to help build corporate collaborations.

Travel for meetings in major financial centers and partner offices as necessary.

Review and assist with reports to corporate partners.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Bachelor's degree required, advance degree preferred (MBA,JD, MS).

 

Experience:

Five or more years of experience at the intersection of university and corporate partnerships, negotiating agreements/grants (preferably with experience in the financial sector and at a university).

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

 

Skills:

Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills; Presentation skills and experience; Patience and experience to build consensus strategies across academic and corporate cultures; Proven ability to grasp complex subjects, meet project deadlines, and build professional relationships; A dynamic, enthusiastic individual who enjoys working collaboratively; Leadership, initiative, creativity, team spirit, integrity and sound judgment; Preference for team success rather than personal recognition.
