Occupational Summary

Lead the development and implementation of strategic, innovative online education initiatives for the Pratt School of Engineering in collaboration with faculty, staff and external partners. Manage execution of Pratts distance education activities, providing administrative guidance and oversight. Position Duke Engineering as a globally recognized resource for best of breed digital learning experiences to launch new offerings and expand current programming.

Work Performed

Define the Pratt School's vision, strategy and mission for distance education in conjunction with the senior leadership team to develop short and long term goals.

Engage regularly with Pratt departmental leadership to explore, inventory and recommend areas of market opportunity for current and new online offerings.

Design and implement distance education programs with Engineering Deans, Chairs and Faculty.

Develop online education policies and procedures for faculty and students the School of Engineering in collaboration with Duke CIT.

Contribute to the development of curricular requirements for distance programs within and across departments, schools and/or institutions; facilitate the delivery of academic content for Residencies or other mandatory elements.

Work with the Executive Director to prepare and administer a distance learning budget as well as a Distributed MEMP operational budget; monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds.

Partner with Pratt IT to assess hardware/software resources and create a long term infrastructure strategy for distance education initiatives.

Contribute to the development and execution of an on going marketing and recruitment strategy for all distance offerings; partner with Recruitment and Enrollment Services leadership as well as Departments to ensure the admission of diverse, highly qualified students to online programs.

Provide staff leadership when appropriate.

Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisal, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Educate Pratt faculty and staff about distance learning modalities as well as effective pedagogical approaches for remote learners; lead the examination and adoption of innovative instructional techniques.

Evangelize and promote current successes as appropriate.

Provide guidance for career, student and academic services for distance students in partnership with departmental Masters Coordinators as well as the Director for Graduate Student Services and Career Services leadership.

Develop a training/professional development curriculum for distance faculty with a focus on optimizing student engagement, course design, technology/tools knowledge and assessment.

Advise distance students, providing academic or procedural guidance as appropriate in the online learning environment.

Identify best practices from other institutions as well as industry for integration into Pratts online initiatives through participation in relevant conferences, workgroups and professional organizations; regularly share key learning about current trends with the Pratt community as appropriate.

Represent Duke Engineering in broader forums related to distance learning initiatives, working with key university stakeholders to ensure the continual growth of online programs.

Assess the quality of distance education activities and services for students as well as faculty; implement strategies for continuous improvement to ensure that core needs are met.

Track operational metrics related to recruiting, enrollment, retention and career mobility; develop and execute plans for continuous improvement.

Collaborate with the Vice Provost of Academic Affairs regarding required SACS filings and documentation for distance education, state authorization of distance education, and educational compliance.

Provide input for University assessment activities related to online degree programs as required; serve as an advocate for distance education programs with internal or external constituents.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program. Masters degree strongly preferred.

 

Experience:

A minimum of five years industry experience in technology/engineering based companies required. Experience with masters education desired. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
