Occupational Summary

Direct and coordinate the operation and maintenance of the Biology Plant Teaching and Research Facility to support the Department of Biology's research, teaching and outreach missions.

Work Performed

Coordinate and supervise plant care and daily operation and maintenance of Plant Teaching and Research Facility.

Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations. Approve expenditures.

Review fiscal reports provided by accounting staff.

Direct the design and maintenance of new collections greenhouse; coordinate relocation of temporary and permanent collections.

Direct various personnel functions including but not limited to, hiring, training, performance evaluations, merit recommendations, promotion recommendations, work and vacation schedules.

Evaluate current and proposed services and facilities.

Plan and develop methods for more efficient greenhouse operations. Formulate short and long range goals for the Facility.

Confer with faculty, students and research personnel to determine planting needs and resolve special problems.

Attend horticultural and botanical meetings, conventions, and seminars to stay abreast of new developments and techniques.

Serve as Plant Growth Facility liaison to the university and community.

Promote outside interest in the greenhouse facilities through plant shows and website.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires knowledge normally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program in horticulture, plant and soil science, botany or a related field.

 

Experience:

Work generally requires three years of experience.
