Occupational Summary

The Assistant Dean provides strategic leadership and supervision of activities within one of the units of the Law School. Primary responsibilities include development, organization, and oversight of support programs for the Law School community and administration of the School of Law.

Work Performed

Provide direction, development, coordination, communication, training and supervision of newly established and existing programs and administrative functions.

Plan, coordinate and administer activities of assigned programs and areas of responsibility to include developing and implementing procedures, processes, and services.

Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, analyze and investigate programmatic trends, prioritize opportunities for improvement. Recommend and implement modifications to improve program effectiveness and enhance financial or systematic processes. Formulate and refine clearly delineated operational and financial short-range and long-term goals.

Develop initiatives that complement existing support services in The Law School while expanding the school's current offerings and resources. Serve as a resource to Associate Dean and/or Dean while providing exemplary customer service to staff, students, and faculty.

Create a structured and comprehensive set of support programs that addresses broad and discipline specific opportunities designed to help students with diverse backgrounds and entering diverse fields of law.

Build on existing collaborations and partnerships across the campus and beyond, and explore new avenues for providing resources to students. Help to promote Law School opportunities. Serve as a Law School liaison and champion in collaborations and communications with other schools, departments and administrative units within and outside of Duke University.

Strengthen communications for and with constituents; assess and recommend methods for communicating with faculty, students, and departmental staff. Provide training, seminars, or workshops as requested.

Collaborate with other units or programs in the Law School.

Seek grant or funding opportunities as appropriate to support initiatives.

Participate in financial matters including analysis, planning, budget projection, and strategic formulation as needed. Monitor and verify expenditures.

Manage and coordinate various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance evaluations, corrective action, and monitoring/approving vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires a knowledge and understanding of college experience and student life as well as analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program. Advanced degree (masters or doctorate) is preferred.

 

Experience:

Must have at least 5 years' experience in university setting, broad knowledge of higher education and specific knowledge of issues related to graduate education.
